Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

We have a new 6978 AIO printer.  We need to print 65# matte cardstock signs and I want to sent up a printer shortcut.  What should I use for paper type?  Neither cardstock nor index cards are listed as options on the printer preference screen or the screen on the actual printer.  One of the matte photo papers seem to come the closest weight wise as far as I can tell or possibly "Thick plain paper".  I'm not familiar with professional or brochure papers.  I'd like to save wear and tear on the printer since our old printer finally died when it could not feed cardstock.

Thank you

Betsey

Information on HP Papers (as of 2013):

"Cards" and "Photo Paper" provide the range you seek.

As long as the software provides an available (allowed) combination for the size of the paper and the selected Media type, then you can print.  If you try to select an unsupported combination, then you will see a tiny yellow triangle Yellow_Status.png  next to the unavailable selection(s).

For example:
Media type Card is allowed in standard sizes:
Paper type
Paper size
Index card
101 x 152 mm (4.0 x 6.0 inches)
Index card
127 x 203 mm (5.0 x 8.0 inches)
A6 card
105 x 148 mm (4.1 x 5.8 inches)
A4 index card
210 x 297 mm (8.3 x 11.7 inches)
O**bleep**u Hagaki**
200 x 148 mm (7.8 x 5.8 inches)
Index Card Letter
216 x 279 mm (8.5 x 11 inches)
Japanese postcard
100 x 148 mm (3.9 x 5.8 inches)

This printer, when using the Full Feature Software, supports creating Custom Sizes.

If the combination you seek (Media type and Paper Size) is not available, you might be able to create a Custom Size template to accomodate your paper.

When you create the Custom template, start with the paper that matches your Media type.

For example, if you want to create a Custom template for "Card", scroll through your available Media types until you find the Media type match.

Custom Size is only the "size" -- that is why you want to start with the matching Media type.

From the How-to Section:

Example:

Printing Preferences

See Section:

  • Custom Paper Sizes
Fancy_Lines_4.jpg

There are many conversion charts available to convert "bond" to "gsm" paper weight.

Use your favorite search engine and search for "gsm conversion chart" or "gsm to bond paper weight" (or other keywords of your choice).

One Example:

Fancy_Lines_4.jpg

Another way to find out what you have is to look up the paper itself.
Use your favorite search engine to find the paper type you want to check.

I'm sorry but this contradicts an answer from a previous post asking about media supported by this printer.  I posted under the title HP Officejet Pro 6978 All-in-One printer on 8/21/2016 1:09.  I was refered to this document http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05061732 which indicated that this printer supported various weights up to and including 90-110# index cards.  It indicates support for 65# photo paper which seems to come pretty close.  Obviously I am a bit troubled by the conflicting information.

Indeed, the issue may be an issue of how I interpreted the information.

For example, if Media type "Brochure matte" is available, and the weight of your paper falls within the limit, try Brochure Matte.  The advantage of using a non-photo Media selection is that you are perhaps less likely to receive the "paper mismatch" error (wording varies).

Brochure Matte 180gsm is 48bond; in this instance Brochure Matte will not provide a viable solution.

Index Card size Letter may work depending on the Size.  You might be able to create a Custom Size template from the Index Card Letter original (for other than 8.5" X 11" card paper).

I've read bpth the manual and tech specs provided.  None of them associate the paper type options available with the corresponding weights very well.  A previous answer refers to Matte Brochure paper but I have no idea what that is or what it "weighs".  Matte photo paper is the closest match based on the tech specs but these are not photos.  We are printing the 65# card stock successfully but I'd like to save wear and tear on  the printer.

Thanks
