My printer prints fine from the glass and top feed, so the ink is fine. But it prints too light from computer, with cord from the printer connected.

Hey @tyoh,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see that you are having some issues with printing from your Mac OSX 10.11 machine to your Officejet 6500 All-in-One Printer. I can help you with that.
To start, make sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not a surge protector. Once done:
- If the printer is connected to your Mac through a USB cable, remove it.
- Close all programs you have open.
- Click on your Apple icon, System Preferences, Printers and Scanners.
- Hold down the control key and click on the icon of your printer on the left.
Now, if you removed the USB cable, connect it. If not:
- Click on the plus icon in the corner.
- Select your printer from the list.
- Click in the box next to Use and select your printer from this list.
- Click on Add.
At this point you should be able to print correctly. If you can not, please let me know what programs you are printing from and if you have this issue in other programs.
Please let me know the results after following the above. If you are able to resolve your issue, please click on Accept Solution. If you appreciate my help, please click on the thumbs up icon. Both icons are below this post.
