Hi Rings,
Yes it possible to plug the USB in and have a direct connection. This would certainly clear up your Envy 4500 from dropping off your wireless network all the time. Please select the link below for the USB installation for your current Operating System Windows 7 or 8:
Installing the Printer Software in Windows 7 for a USB Cable Connection
OR
Installing the Printer Software in Windows 8 for a USB Cable Connection
I hope this was helpful, if you require more assistance please let me know.
Thanks,

Do not have a menu/setup button. I do have the problems you have described. I do have a router hooked up to my computer, but the printer is not networked-it is hooked up by usb. How do I get the needed information? From the router's web page? Do I have to hook my printer up as a networked printer? How will this affect the other computer/printer combos on my network?

Hello dgh123,
I understand you are having a problem with your printer going offline. Because you are plugged in with a USB, setting a static IP would not resolve this issue for you. Setting a Static IP is for printers that keep dropping off their wireless network. Alot of times simply disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable will reset the print system and it will resolve the issue. Please proceed with the steps listed below:
Step one: Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable:
Disconnect the USB cable from the back of the HP product
Disconnect the USB cable from the back of the computer.
Wait five seconds.
Step three: Try a different USB cable:

Hello helpinphx,
I understand you would like help setting up your OfficeJet 6500 Plus. I would be happy to help you with that.
Let's go ahead and Restore Factory Defaults on the front panel of your printer:
Setup Menu > Tools > Restore Factory Defaults > Yes
Now we will run the Wireless Setup Wizard on the front panel as well:
Setup Menu > Network > Wireless > Wireless Setup Wizard
You will be able to see your home network pop up in the populated list of networks to connect to, please have your wireless key ready as it will require the password to successfully connect.
Once you have successfully connected to your network let's go ahead and print and Network Configuration Page, this is also done on the front of your printer:
Setup Menu > Reports > Network Configuration Page
On this page you will see your printers IP address (192.168.XXX.XXX OR 10.X.X.X), and will be able to put this into your web browser exactly as it is shown and reach your Embedded Web Server (EWS).
If you would like to do an Embedded Web Server wireless setup, you will see the Setup option to the far right of your EWS please select Wireless Setup Wizard and click Next to begin your setup.
I hope this was helpful, if you need more assistance please let me know.
Thanks,
