Last week I configured not one but 2 HP LaserJet 400 M451dn Colour printers for a client. The reason it was 2 is that I returned the first to the supplier thinking there was a fault with the printer showing a 49 Error randomly but when I got exactly the same error on the 2nd and identical printer and from a different supplier, I thought this cannot be the case.

What I found was this - I configured the printer with a static IP of 192.168.0.218 and excluded this address in the DHCP reservation list so it wasn't allocated to another device. If I switched the printer on without the LAN cable attached the printer would say 'Ready', but as soon as I connected the LAN cable, that's when it would throw a wobbly and show 'Error 49 - Turn off then on'. I tried resetting the printer to factory defaults without any joy.

HERE's THE FIX (or shall I say a workaround) in this order:

1) Remove the LAN / Network cable from the printer.

2) Reset the printer to factory defaults.

3) Remove the DHCP reservation of 192.168.0.218 from the server.

4) Delete the lease IP 192.168.0.218 from the server.

5) Connect the LAN cable to the printer.

6) Let the printer obtain a new IP address. If it picks up the same IP again you need to go back to step 1 again.

7) That's it.

For some reason, this printer will NOT allow you to set a static IP address and put a reservation on the server. Nuts!

I've installed more HP printers than I can count over the years and never experienced this problem. As I mentioned above, this is more of a workaround than an actual fix..

Hope you guys find this post useful.

I had Exactly the same problem with a LaserJet 400 M451dn, except in a workgroup with the router doing DHCP, used a static address outside of the DHCP pool for 2 days and then this week got Error 49, noticed that when the Lan cable was disconnected it seemed to stop. Changed printer to use DHCP and it works again. (firmware update via USB had no effect)
