HP OfficeJet 8720
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

I just bought a Officejet 8720 and went through the default set-up for my macbook air.  The regular printing works but when I try the "scan to computer" button on the printer it tells me that I need to open the HP Utility and enable Scan to Computer.  However, when I open the HP Utility program I get an error stating that it cannot communicate with the 8720.  Does anyone have a solution to this?

Hey @DHeil,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I understand that you are having some issues with scanning from your Officejet 8720 e-All-in-One Printer to your Mac OSX 10.11 machine. I can help you with that.

To start, make sure the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet and not a surge protector. Once done:

  1. Disable any antivirus, firewall, or security software on your Mac.
  2. If your printer is connected to your Mac through a network, contact whoever provided you with the router and ask them to Open All Ports, Enable Multicasting, Disable MAC Filtering/MAC Cloning, disable the guest network, and make sure the router has a 2.4GHz (Giga-Hertz) band.
  3. Restart your Mac.

Please let me know if this allows you to use the utility to enable Scan to PC. If you can, please click on Accept Solution. If you appreciate my help, please click on the thumbs up icon. Both icons are below this post.

I have the macOS Sierra 10.12 and suspect that is what is causing the printer driver to come back and say that scan to computer cannot be enabled.  i unistalled the first driver and reinstalled it and it worked once, then not again.  is there a patch to fix this?  I'm just on a home wifi. thanks

I think you're right about it being related to macOS Sierra 10.12.  I recently upgraded to that OS and now the scan to computer is not working again.  It had been working perfectly after working through the initial set-up problems with HP tech support back in July.
