When I click on Open Scanner the widow that opens is greyed out. At the top of this window it says "Scanner", and at the bottom there are buttons for "Hide Details", "Overview", and "Scan", but all of these are greyed out. Nothing elese is displayed in this window. This same printer has worked fine with other computers. I just installed the complete latest drivers for this printer from HP's website. Thank you for your help.
Update: I deleted the printer and scanner in the Mac setup, and re-added it. Now Mac "sees" the printer, but not the scanner (it doesn't recognise that it's a multi-function machine).

Hi @Andy48,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you cannot scan with your HP Deskjet 1055 printer, on Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan. I am happy to look into this issue for you!
Looking at the Software and Driver Downloads website, the latest driver I see that is available for this printer, is for Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite. Which, would explain the the scanner window is grayed out. Especially, if you had recently upgraded from Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite, to Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan.
I would recommend to make sure your Mac is up-to-date. How to update OS X and Mac apps, and then try one of these alternative methods for scanning, How to Scan to a Mac (OS X).

Thank you for your help. I first made sure that my Mac is fully up to date by following the instructions, then I installed HP Easy Scan. The HP Easy Scan program was unable to find a scanner attached to my computer (even though the DeskJet 1055 is directly attached to the computer via a USB cable. The computer can query the printer and retrive all information from it, so the connection is working perfectly). The Apple Image Capture and Preview programs also say that there is no scanner connected to the computer, and expect HP Scan would have the same result. How can I fix this problem so I can use the 1055 to scan documents? Thanks again for your help.

Hi Andy48,
Thank you for trying my suggestions!
Let's double-check and make sure that this driver, has been downloaded and installed. Once this is installed, power off the Mac, power off the printer. Unplug the USB printer cable from both ends. Wait 30 seconds plug the cable back in, then turn the printer back on, and the Mac back on. Try scanning again using the methods I mentioned earlier.
