I have no idea how I did it but did it I did and the scanner is now working after a number of reinstalls.

However, I was a trifle suprised at the slow speed of scanning on the ADF with pages taking between 30 and 40 seconds when the claim is 8, or was it 4, pages per minute.

I wonder if it is it possible to speed that up?

I am now going up to the shooting range and hope that my newly found luck holds out there.

Corporal,

Fixed is Fixed.  Count it to luck or whatever, it is a good thing.  Smiling.  I am very glad it is working!

Go back to the website and get the scanner patch.  Take a look at the FAQ pages and see if there is anything there about the delay between pages.  It is possible that the scanner is just slow... not a great thing, to be sure.

Before you load the patch (or do anything else), create a Restore Point in case things go sideways.

It is possible that some of what you are seeing on your system is due to:

  • Need for general Windows Updates and / or HP updates from your computer's website.
  • OS general fatigue / corruption ... registries and drivers and programs don't last forever in pristine condition.  At some point, it is POSSIBLE that you may wish to back up everything and just reinstall the whole Operating System.  This is just a thought, now, and nothing to get excited about.

Good Luck on the range.  Good place to take out one's frustrations, yes?

Many thanks for that and I will work my way through it when I have reached a satisfactory stage in the negotiating process I'm going through with my wife regarding dumping stuff from the attic that is 50 years old.

I now have another two questions regarding scanning times because I am taking up to one minute a page which is nowhere near the 8 seconds a page the Scanjet 5590 reviews claim.

  1.  I would like to achieve a scan that I can save in a series of folders and which I use with the “Search programmes” and files facility with a, name, title or date so my question is.  “What is the most effective program to use?

 2.  I started with Document to Tiff which took close to 1 minute to scan and then moved to Document to PDF which also took close to one minute.  I intend to work my way down through all the options offered using ten pages at a time to get an average but I wonder what the general speed other users have managed to achieve with what program?

Corporal,

Good luck on the Cleanout!  We are on the last leg of a three year push - over thirty years on this house and now it's at the toughest part.  Smiling.

I wonder if the easiest way to deal with this is to scan the files in and THEN convert them.  Not sure about this - I've done some bulk scanning for old photos; it's a hassle to say the least no matter which method I've used.

Total PDF Converter

About CoolUtils converter program:  This version is $50.  If you want to create editable .pdf files, it's about $70.  You can download the program for FREE and use the free version.  There is some advertising, is all.  Works well.  I've used both the Free version and the I have purchased  the Total Converter program. Try it, if you like.  There are other good softwares out there on the net, too.

The CoolUtils converter programs (and variants available at the site) can convert just about anything to anything.  It might be the way to go if you have lots and lots of files.  This way you can scan the image into the computer as, say a jpg file, then convert it once it is on the system.

I hope this helps...

I am well on my way now after contacting HP who sugested that I go to Start, then key "Wiaacmgr" into run and as a result I am getting scan speeds of 8 seconds a page which is great.  I only wish that I had sufficent computing knowledge to understand how that works when approaching a scan from using the keys on the side of the scanner did not work.

Fixed is fixed!  Excellent as far as it goes and the speed is certainly a main feature.

Check out that converter if you ever need it... One cool thing you can do with the free online software (or purchased software) is create icons from any tiny little jpg file you have around or images you find (Google images of, say, birds...).  Nice.  You can create your own custom icons for your folders.  Smiling.

I'd call this one solved.  Smiley Happy

Many thanks for everybodies help but I can not work with page scan speeds of fifty seconds so it looks as though I will have to do some research into what scanners can achieve and then go and spend some money.

Corporal,

Thought you were getting 8 seconds... ??

Well, part of the issue may be the DPI you are using.  Dots Per Inch...

And, yes, if you cut down on the DPI, you can get faster scans, but lousy pictures.

I agree - you may have to buy a better box.  The newer ones are usually faster.  Do some homework so you get the quality and speed and not just fast and cheap.  Watch out for cheap and then have to pay a heavy price for the most expensive ink on the planet.   I have read about people that do that and then trash the box the second time they have to buy the ink.  (And, not just HP printers - any printer company might do that to you...)

I don't know a thing about specifics so I don't dare make a recommendation - my printer already needs to be replaced (J6480) - it works fine but hasn't any of the latest and greatest bits to make it "eprint" this or that... it is fast enough but it lacks some of the features I want now.  Smiling.  I keep it just becaue I know as soon as I buy a new one, something better will come out.  Maybe I'll spring for one this fall.  Smiley Happy  I have about three hundred old family photos waiting to be scanned that I keep putting off...

Good Luck!

I did get 8 seconds but that was scanning to a TIFF File and that will not allow any editing.

It was not a matter of the DPI because I tried at the lowest I could use with no effect.

The problem is that the scanner was just very slow but when I reach a decision on what I would like to buy I am contacting the manufacturer and asking them if the speeds they claim relate to scanning a page of text to PDF.

Ah, understood.

If you do purchase something and wish to share, please do post back so we can benefit from your experience!  Smiling.
