Thanks Stephen, it seems to be working.

Stephen's solution did NOT work for me.  My OfficeJet is basically useless to me on this computer now.  It worked a couple of days ago, and then stopped working with no changes made.

You're not going to get any satisfaction on this.  I just wait for mine to go out again.  That heppened when I was using Windows 7.  Somebody made an update, whether it was Windows or HP, no one will ever know because HP doesn't have good knowledge of how its products work with anything.  I did cure my problem when I loaded Windows 8.  I'm waiting for some update or other to throw me back into not recognizing my imagining device.  HP's support is going to be no use to you.  They're simply not knowledgeablle and don't have any good suggestions.  I feel for you.  I spent a year without being able to scan.

Oops, I was trying to respond to you and it posted as a separate post.  I had the same problem with the imaging device not being recognized and HP is useless.  Their support sucks to the max.  They don't know how their products work with anything much.  Somebody made an update, I don't know whether it was Windows or HP, and I suddenly couldn't use my scanner anymore no matter how circuitous a route I took.  No amount of HP support was useful.  They have two or three same old approaches that don't do anything.  I was on Windows 7.  I spent a year without scanning ability with a printer I bought because it had a scanner.  Then I loaded Windows 8 and it suddenly worked again.  I'm always on edge waiting for someone to update my system, I won't know who, and the scanner will go back to the North Pole.  Frustrating, isn't it?  Even worse, HP's techs don't have a clue.  I spent hours and hours on the phone with them, online, everything.  I would try again every few weeks, for a year, until Windows 8 came out.  My sympathies.  All this had made me very hostile to HP, unhelpful, unimaginative and uncaring.

same error message, similar solution.

Windows Install Cleanup - I found a hp5590 item even after I completely uninstalled all HP products.  After removing this with the cleanup utility and reinstalled the drives it started working.

I guess in general you sould remove all suspicious (scan, hp[modelnumber] etc.) items from the list then reinstall the software.

I have a more thorough way of cleaning out everything out. If you would like the steps, just let me know what version of Windows you are using and what brand of computer.

The steps depend on if it is a HP computer or not. If you use the steps on a HP computer, it will delete files that you need for the computer to run properly.

A BIG thanks to this post.

Aftert installing win 8 pro the scanner just would  not work, and kept getting this image not found error.

So what I did was ( variation on this message 😞

- Installed "Fix it" from microsoft

- Located "bdp_scan"

- Then used HP installer to remove all HP

- Double checked under "remove programs"

- Rebooted PC

- Used HP installer software and all went swimmingly

SCANNER now fully operational.

Thank you
