Hi,

I have LaserJet 4000 series, I set Tray 1 to cassette, that means, it should print from Tray 2 whenever Tray 1 is empty or close. but I get a message on the display screen: "Tray 1 Load plain A4", so the printer keeps asking for paper in Tray 1, how to solve this?

Here are details of the problem:

I have the following configuration:
Tray 1 mode= Cassette
Tray 1 size= A4
Tray 1 type= Plain
only tray 2 is loaded with A4.
whenever I print a paper (even the configuration page) I get the following message:
"Tray 1 Load plain A4" so I press GO then I get "Use plain legal instead" so I press GO once more, then the page is printed from Tray 2 but with another error message: "41.3 Unexpected Paper Size".

I really need help, I called HP support; after 25 min, they couldnt do anything.

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers or Printers and Faxes.
- Or -
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Printers.
2. Right-click the printer icon, and then click Properties, Document Defaults, or Printing Preferences.
3. Select one of these tabs: Configure, Device Settings, or Device Options. (The name of the tab depends on the print driver and the operating system.) On the selected tab, click the accessory that you want to turn on, click Installed from the drop-down menu, and then click OK.

Yes HP printers sucks for this. You can't set tray2 as default tray... I wonder who's the genius at HP who has decided that.

Everybody has this issue, but nothing to solve it.

And changing things in the OS control panel, is just a workaround, it's not a solution.

The link provided as "the solution" leads to a post which has been "permanently deleted".

So, let's start over again:

Does anyone know how to configure the control panel of an HP Laserjet 4000 series printer so that it defaults to Tray 2......i. e. the cassette, instead of Tray 1, i.e. the manual feed/envelope/single sheet feed tray?

I don't see the option anywhere in the programs I'm trying to print from when I select Print on any of my Windows 10 computers.

I WAS able to print from Tray 2 on my Lenovo laptop previously, but it seems that either connecting my printer directly to my router......or "adding" the printer to my new Asus Win 10 laptop has made the tray selection option disappear.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Michael

Dear

Why are there two complete sets of directions in your ONE post?

Neither of which work for me, by the way.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,

Michael

Hey, Emile.........if you managed to print automatically from Tray 2 without running all the way to the printer to change something every time.........call it a workaround or not..........HOW did you do it?

I'm happy with a workaround if that's what it takes.

Thanks,

Michael

Specificly on an Android Device.

1. Download the "HP Smart" App.

2. Go into the App.

3. Go to the "Print Documents" section.

4. Check off a document that you want to print (Any Document is okay this is just to get to the next step).

5. Click the Printer icon at the top of the screen.

6. Click the Three dots at the top right of the screen.

7. Settings.

8. Paper.

9. Uncheck the "Automaticly Detect Paper"  Option.

Now it should allow you to chose whichever tray you want when printing...
