I recieved this printer last week and still have not been able to get it going. I've followed all the steps in the manual and start guide and keep getting stopped by the same message. "The software required for your printer could not be installed." I've searched for answers on how to correct this, but nothing I've found has worked for me. I have had no recent software or driver changes. My internet connection is wireless. Thank you in advance for your help.

Thanks for the reply. I could not find any software for this printer to uninstall. However, I did uninstall the software for my previous HP printer.
I used your link and got to the HP Printer Install Wizard. I checked the box that says "my printer is already configured for use on same network as my computer." I clicked next and then it discovered my printer in the next window. It said that the printer is in fact on the same network as the computer. I highlighted the printer as prompted and clicked next. For some reason it went back to the "discovering" window and then back to the initial window where I originally checked the "my printer is already configured for use on same network as my computer" box. I went through this cycle several times until finally, the window just disappeared.
The installation window did appear again, I went through the motions, but still got the original message that the software could not be installed.
I don't understand. I realize the install wizard said I may need to use a usb cable for the printer to be discovered, but it showed that the pc and printer were connected. Even so, the printer did not come with a usb cable. I would assume that if using a usb cable was a necessary step then they would provide it with the printer.

@brando76, thanks for the reply.
Thanks for trying out the steps.
It looks like the printer software has not been deleted completely from your PC.
Please try the steps recommended below.
· Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Envy 4520 entries and uninstall them.
· Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
· Restart your computer.
· Click the bottom-left Start button on the desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.
· Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.
· Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer” – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".
· Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”.
· Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
· Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
· Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
I'll watch your reply!
Have a pleasant day ahead! 🙂

I went through all the steps you gave me. Again, in the Programs and Features, there was mention of the HP 4520. However, there was some files on my old HP Photosmart D110 printer. I did remove those.
I then removed the 4520 from the "Devices and Printer" and then restarted the computer.
In the Device Manager, I deleted all entries in printer tab and the imaging devices. I deleted all the HP files from the print queue, but left some that said "Microsoft to PDF" and "Microsoft XPS" because I wasn't sure if I should or not. I did not see anthing that said "unknown device."
I typed in "printui.exe /s" and deleted one HP file. There was a HP D110 file in there that I could not delete. It said "Unable to remove...the specified driver is currently in use." ?? I don't know how or why it is in use. Could this be my problem? Also there were more Microsoft files in there that I was afraid to delete.
I then went to the Programdata and deleted all files under the Hewlett Packard folder.
After all that, I tried your link out again, and again I got the same message. "The software required for your printer could not be installed"

– Open a command prompt with administrator rights.
– Type: msiexec /unregister and press Enter.
– After the command completes type: msiexec /register and press Enter again.

As you mentioned you still have issues installing the printer software.
Please try installing the windows built in drivers and check if it helps.

I did all the steps. When I got to add a printer. The printer showed up, I highlighted it, and clicked next. It then asked for a WPS number. Not sure what that it, but my printer was showing a number on its screen so I typed that in. It seemed satified with that, it showed my printer on the devices and printer screen, and then the 4520 printer turned a shade of grey, like it's there but not really there. When I mouse over it, it says "status: driver is unavailable, status: not connected."
It did not give me the option of installing any drivers. My printer says that it is connected to my router and my pc is definitely connected to the router. Is there a way to see if it actually connected or not?
