HP Laserjet 5100
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I've had the worst luck with the UPD PostScript drivers, though I did get it to finally work in W7. Now I have a new PC with W10, and for the life of me I cannot get it to install and work correctly. When I first install it, it always states it is installing the PCL version, which makes no sense. I select the USB option since I'm using a Parallel to USB cable. When I print a test page, it prints an error message on the paper. I cant remember exactly what it was, but it was like 5 lines in the top left hand margin. I finally installed the Window's update version of the PS driver and it appeared to install correctly. Even the test page printed successfully. Yet, when I opened Corel X4, I noticed the PostScript tab was missing from the File/Print window. I have rebooted the PC with no change.

So, how can the PS driver (Windows version) be installed, yet Corel is not detecting the printer as using PS? (it does in W7 though) And mostly, why is the HP UPD PS driver installing as PCL?

Thank you

Mike

Hi Modify_inc,

You try uninstall/remove “upd-ps-x64-6.3.0.21178.exe” driver, then reinstall with some old drivers version of HP at:

 ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/UPD/

Note: Some old printers work fine with "6.0.0.18449" version. You can try download and install with “upd-ps-x64-6.0.0.18849.exe”.

Hope this helps.

Regards.

Thanks for the suggestion, I am attempting to remove the old driver but it keeps saying it can not be deleted because it is in use. I have even rebooted the PC and the same thing. The printer is not even connected to the PC, and the icon of the printer is gone from the Devices and Printers window.

The following package(s) can not be deleted:

hpcu190v.inf (x64)
This package contains the following driver(s) that are in use:
HP Universal Printing PS; This driver is used on:
   HP Universal Printing PS

The following driver(s) can not be deleted:

Driver HP Universal Printing PS (x64) is in use. It is used on:
    HP Universal Printing PS

It still installing as PCL, though this time it actually named the printer HP Universal Print PS, but the driver it is using says it is HP LaserJet 5100 PCL6 Class Driver. Under properties, the model also says it is a HP LaserJet PCL6 Class Driver.  And most of all, it is still not showing the PostScript tab in Corel.

What gives, why is it doing this?

Hi Modify_inc,

You need to uninstall the existing drivers for the printer completely from Windows, try follow these steps:

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control panel/Programs and feature, select all the HP LaserJet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control Panel/Devices and printer, select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Click the bottom-left "Start" button on desktop, type "device manager" in the search box and tap "Device Manager" on the menu.
  • Once in "Device manager", click on the "View" tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.
  • Then from the "Device manager" list, check the entries under “Printer” – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device uninstall popup, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".
  • Also, check the entries under "Printer queue" and "Imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”.
  • Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to "run" window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Once done, you can try cleaning out your temporary files and cached files. You can try using automated applications like some cleaner software's that you can download from the internet.
  • Now restart your computer again.
  • Run “upd-ps-x64-6.0.0.18849.exe”.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted.

Let me know if this works.

I glad to help you.

Regards.

When I remove the Driver Package from the Print Server Properties, it says it was remoived successfully, but failed to remove package prnhpcl3.inf. Access is denied.

Driver HP LaserJet 5100 PCL6 Class Driver was removed.
Failed to remove package prnhpcl3.inf. Access is denied.

Isn't prnhpcl3.inf a windows system file, so it's protected, correct? Why is it using a windows file (driver) rather than the driver I downloaded. May that explain why the PCL version is always installed.

Anyway, other than that, it is completely removed, yet after rebooting and reinstalling the HP UPD driver, I'm right back where I was, and it's still using the PCL version.

Also, when removing the printer from the Device Manager, it never asked me to “Delete the driver software for this device". I assume this is because it's using the Windows driver rather than the HP driver.

Hi,

I read Sunshyn2005’s post, she wrote:

“You may receive one of a few errors when trying to do this. A few of these are shown below with some information about why the errors may be occurring.

If you get a message saying ‘The following package(s) can not be deleted’ or ‘The following driver(s) can not be deleted’ with your printer name listed, it will normally be followed by the reason. In most cases it will say that it is ‘in use’.

If documents are stuck in the print spooler, this error could be due to those. cancelling any documents pending under any printer, then try to remove the driver from ‘Print server properties’ again.

If it still won’t remove the package, restarting the computer should resolve this ‘in use’ error and allow the driver to be removed.

After the driver is removed from the server properties we can proceed with uninstalling the software.”

I hope this helps.
