Dot4 is basically USB.  001 is port 1.

You may not have the hardware installed correctly.  I'd check out the Device Manager while the printer is plugged in and powered on.  If you have any unknown or unfinished hardware devices try to direct them to the software installation files.  This will help them complete the hardware connection so your PC can talk to the printer.

I wouldnt worry too much about dot4 vs USB too much.  Focus more on whats going on with teh Device Manager.  If there are no connections in the Device Manager then you have a physical connection problem that needs to be resolved.  Leave the DM open and unplug/replug the printer.  You should see the DM refresh itself to help you verify the conenctions are showing up correctly.  If they are they should be under the USB area.

Pinging is a networking tool.  If your printer is network connected that is another story.  Perhaps you mean the printer is also network connected in addition to USB?  You will want to choose one scenario while you are troubleshooting.  A printer can be perfectly connected to the network yet not USB connected to another printer.

When in doubt, uninstall and reinstall the printing software on the two PCs that do not work.  USB can only be shared with one PC at a time, it would make sense that the other 2 PCs go offline if that is how you are connecting.  If you are using some kind of USB Hub then that is another story.

Actually the easy way to test if using windows is to go to devices and printer and add printer and choose network printer and see if the printer shows in the list and if it does select. Another method is to go to networking and again windows display workgroup or network computer and if the computer that has the printer attached is listed double click on it and the printer should show up as an icon.  Click on it and it will ask if you want to attach. Try and see what happens.
