Problem is still no closer to being solved...

So I take you cannot install your printer over the network. If you would like some assistance I will need to know what printer you have, what kind of computer you are trying to install it on (Windows 7, Windows 8, Mac 10.x, etc) and if you are getting any error messages.

Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g (CN579A)

Installation failure issue (wired ethernet).

Printer is available on the network, able to send emails, access application on the the net, send to network folder etc. etc.
Computer can access printer web page etc.

However, using both the CD installation or complete uniistall and downloaded new HP intall software, the result is the same.

After selecting the printer off the list in the network install page, the next page says "Unsuccessful Network Installation" "The printer was unable to be installed over the network"

Even without complete installation it is possible to print from the computer normally.

Sorry to hear that CaptFantastic. I want to start with the basics tho. First try the HP Printer Install Wizard if you haven't already. It uses a different install method.  Then try the HP Print and Scan doctor next. Make sure neither your computer or the printer are on a guest network or an unsecured one.

If neither of those suggestions work, answer these questions please:

1. What is the printer's IP address?

2. Can you access its web page by typing that IP address into a web browser?

3. Do you get an error message when you press the ePrint icon on the front panel of the printer (the top left paper looking icon)?

4. And lastly, what is the operating system of the PC?

Install wizard for Win 7 & 8 not Vista

Scan Doctor Say all software is not installed (but I know that, it is a failed installation)

I do not understand... what is an unsecure network (wired Ethernet)?

IP 192.168.2.104 (within range of my subnet)

Visible on network and  web page accessible. Printer was set up from web page and all ePrint and web services are available and working.

"Network Map" discovers device but "cannot be placed on map" After install failed, printer was installed from Vista and is functional.

Secured meaning WPA2 is the preferred encryption method within the router. However, that isn't where we are in the troubleshooting steps because I still need to know the operating system of your PC?? You mentioned Vista but is it 32 bit or 64 bit? I want to send you another link but I will have to know that before I can.

Are you the administrator of this PC (in reference to your user account permissions)?

So this thread has been up for months... I just ran into the same problem... the installation goes through succesfully on a surface pro 2,

but on 2 windows 7 machines. same issue as above, gets detected etc. but won't install. "Unsuccessful Network Installation (the printer was unable to be installed over the network)"

HP is making the millions and we have to waste our valuable time on this nonsense.

This worked for me.

I had to install any other pdf writer or printer again.

What a Pain... wow.

Didn't work for me. But did not try full reinstall... only from "connection options" (wired ethernet) and then "network check".

Frankly, HP install software rarely works and you should simply install printeres from windows. This means some of the HP software options are lost. It also means tha HP is either willfully or negligently distributing products that are known to be faulty, putting the customer to great expense both in terms of time and inconvenience.

This specific problem has been around for years and across thousands of customers and has yet to be solved. It is not a windows problem it is an HP problem Arrgh

Vista Home Premium x64 Version 6.0 Build 6002 Service Pack 2

WPA2  with reference to "wireless" but this is not wireless it is wired ethernet.

No firewall, no AV, no restrictions on router, all comms good outside of the HP Installation software.

Latest firmware for printer CLP1CN1322CR (Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g) installed over network!!!!

Printer embedded web page good
Eprint good
Email scan and net folder good
Fax to folder good

A very nice bit of hardware from HP...  let down by poor programming and diagnostics (as usual).

HP and Obama need to contract out to companies like Valve who actually know how to program without gaping holes in functionality and with proper debugging and diagnostics.

What is needed is to know what the install software is attempting to do when it shows "installing network printer" this is where the failure occurs. Intallation of the printer through Windows has no problem  but that does not help in allowing the proprietory HP install to complete. I would like the HP software to function allowing seemless OCR from scans etc.

After all these year surely someone at HP has got on top of this problem!!!! Come on HP you are embarassing yourselves...
