Using USB printer connection ceases after about 15 min when a page is printed with a single "G"

This is a new printer connected with USB to an IMac computer.  After the 'printer not connected' message is delivered on requesting a print job to be completed and the page with a G is printed, re-connection has be achieved by turning the printer off and then on again.  Sometimes the power has to be disconnected from the printer to turn it off.  I have a mounting pile of blank pages with a single "G" printed on them!
