Hi Michael-
You still should be able to download and use the same desktop solution that you are used for your 7500a on Windows 8.1. The Metro solution was intended to complement the desktop solution and not replace it.

thanks for your prompt response
I should have mentioned that I had tried that "basic" installation too
I've just re-downloaded and tried again (just in case)
interestingly, that installer is unable to find my device until I enter the IP address manually, then it finds it
(the other installer identified the device on the network no probs)
however, it doesn't work ie it didn't place the HPScan icon on the desktop; it does open up into the full HP Printer Assistant interface and the scan dialog gives the same error message I'm complaining about
any other suggestions?

this app closed down near the end of a 17-page scan from the ADF, when I task-switched to another app; and again when I wandered off and the screen-saver cut in.
it seems to like to be baby-sat and to have the whole computer to itself
I had hoped for multi-tasking

Hi Michael,
Yes, unfortunately this is a huge limitation of the OS in general. When an app is not in the foreground, the OS will automatically suspend it, and there is NO way the app can prevent that. MS did not provide any good background task features for Metro apps, especially ones that need dedicated timeshare to keep a real time task such as scanning operational. We complained about this early on but MS made no provisions. So yes, for large batch ADF scans, this is a big problem.
Good news is that MS did bring some new scan API technology into Windows 8.1 (whereas there was no Scan API support in Windwos 8). The new APIs, being Microsoft owned, are granted an exception to the background task rule when running a scan, and therefore can continue when not in the foreground.
We are nearly complete in final test and verification of an update for Windows 8.1 that brings in this new Scan API technology to the Scan and Capture app. Another big advantage of this new version is that it will support all existing scanners with drivers installed, including USB. Keep an eye out for this new release very soon !
Regarding your issues with desktop support, I will direct our test team here to try this out and see what is going on.. what you described certainly doesn't sound like the experience we had intended.

I purchased my HP 8600 in late Sept. 2013. I only wish that this information had been with the printer's instructions, and that the HP Userr Guide (available as a download pdf) had included this information. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for providing a solution which took me days to find out.

Everyone,
We've released a new version of this app in the Windows 8.1 App Store that gives support for MANY more devices! See details in this post (HP Scan and Capture 1.4). Version 1.3 of the app will still be available for Windows 8, but we highly recommend the upgrade/update to WIndows 8.1, and this new version of the app.
