On my new HP OfficeJet Pro 8600, I have the fax set to auto-answer, but always must press "accept" to receive incoming faxes. I am using the two wire cord provided by HP and have no other devices attached to the line. We do not have distinctive ringing; just a plain vanilla analog telephone line connected only to this machine. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

Since you don't have a distinctive ring, make sure that distinctive ring is set to all rings.   It should be by default, but sometimes it's not.

To check/change distinctive ring from the home screen on the printer:

  1. Touch the right arrow button.
  2. Select 'Setup'.
  3. Select 'Fax Setup'.
  4. Select 'Advanced Fax Setup'.
  5. Select 'Distinctive Ring'.
  6. Select 'All Rings'.
  7. Touch the home key.

If that doesn't help, set it to single ring.  If that doesn't help, let me know and I'll see what else you can find.

Thanks.... but neither setting has any effect. I still must press "Accept" to receive faxes!

There is a firmware update for the printer, but it doesn't say it will fix this problem.  It wouldn't hurt to try it.  Sometime the process of installing the new firmware will correct glitches in the printer programing.  Try that and let me know what happens.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I updated the firmware several days ago with no luck. HP says this is an internal hardware problem and they are sending me a new printer. Thanks for your help!
