HP 722c
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I have converted to Windows 10 and need the driver for my HP722C printer. However HP says they have retired support for my printer. How can I get drivers for it?

There are a few considerations for using the Deskjet 722c in Windows 10:

  • You indicated you have the 32 bit version of Windows 10.  That is good, the supplied driver works in Windows 10 32 bit versions.  The 64 bit driver does not work.  This has been a problem since Vista.  There is a patch available for 64 bit versions of Vista and Windows 7, but I was never able to get this working for Windows 8, 8.1 or 10.
  • The Deskjet 722c only supported a parallel port, and most Windows 10 computers do not have parallel ports.  There are USB-parallel converter cables available, but these can be problematic.  Make sure any USB-parallel cable you get is supported in Windows 10.
  • Plug in the USB-parallel cable and install any necessary drivers.  Connect the HP Deskjet 722c and turn on the printer.
  • There is a driver supplied through Windows Update in Windows 10 for the Deskjet 720c, which is a good match for the Deskjet 722c.  Install the driver as follows:  first install any necessary drivers for the USB-parallel cable.  Determine from the documentation for the cable what port (perhaps LPt2:, LPt3: or some other port).  You will need the port information later to install the driver.  When you are ready to install the driver go to the Devices and Printers folder, Add a Printer, The printer that I want isn't listed, Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings, Next, Use an existing port, [select the proper port for your USB-parallel converter in the dropdown], Next, Windows Update, [wait several minutes for the list to repopulate], select HP (not Hewlett Packard or Hewlett-Packard)  for the Manufacturer, select HP Deskjet 720c for the printer, Next, Next, Yes (if prompted for the UAC),[Change the default name to HP Deskjet 722c if you want], Next, Set as default printer (if you want to), Print a test page (if you want), Finish.

That should do the trick.  Please post back here if you have any issues with any of the above.

Thanks for the reply. I misspoke, I have a 64 bit version of Windows 10. I also got ahead of myself trying to get the drivers for my HP 722C, without checking out the cableing situation.  After your reply, I checked and was suprised to see that I do not have a parallel port on my new Windows 10 equipped computer. Rather than going through the hassle and uncertainty of trying to adapt the printer parallel connection to USB, I think it might be time to replace my 722C printer with something newer. Thanks again for your reply.

With a 64 bit version of Windows 10 the HP Deskjet 722c printer will not work, even with the patch and if you bought a proper converter cable. I spent quite a bit of time on this with Windows 8 and 8.1, and managed to get a computer with an actual parallel port to eliminate the converter as an issue.  No success.

I have seen cases where folks have an old computer they can connect the printer to and then share it via File and Printer Sharing, I have not tried this myself.
