Hi,
When I used to print from my iPad via AirPrint on both sides to my HP Photosmart 5520 printer, it used to print so you could flip the pages on the long side. For some reason it has changed to printing so it flips on the short side.
How do I change it back to flipping on the long side?

The fix is to turn off double-sided printing in the options when you are about to print a document and then turn it on again.
After doing this just once, anything printed double-sided will be long-edged printed not short-edge.
It's not a toggle, I can't get my iPad to print double-sided on the short edge now (not that I want to), for some reason once you've turned double-sided printing off and on again, long-sided becomes the permanent default.
Weird!
P.S. It fixes it for all apps.

When I print from an application, I only get the the options to select a printer, select a range (i.e. which pages) and the number of copies.
I've gone through settings and I can't see anything relating to printing.
I'm baffled as to why this has changed- unless it was some sort of update that was applied automatically.

Hi
I was just wondering what type of documents are you trying to print, is it a webpage ? Also do you have the latest ios on your device 7.1.1 ?
I work for HP.
Thanks

The problem has started occurring on all the iPads in our house in a variety of apps.
It's occurring when we print email, print from pages, Final Draft and internet pages.
As far as I can tell, everything on our iPads have been affected by this change.

thats very strange, i wonder would it be worth disconnecting the printer from your network and trying to reinstall it. So everything you try print now prints portrait rather than landscape ?

thanks

No. Flip on long edge/Flip on short edge refers to double-sided printing.
Flip on long edge prints out pages so when collated they read like a book with the pages bound along the long edge on the left hand side.
Flip on short edge prints out pages as if you would bind them along the top, so you would lift the page and read down the two pages. Using this method, the reverse side of the page is upside down.

If you select "Open in another app", you can export the document to the HP ePrint app which, along with other options you don't get in other apps, allows you to select the option of flipping on the long/short side before printing.
It takes a bit longer to do, but it works. Unfortunately, my script writing app does not have that option, so getting it into HP ePrint is a bit more convoluted.
I did check to see if, after changing the option in HP ePrint, it altered the default on the printer, but it still printed the second side upside-down. So if anyone does figure out how to set long-side as the default, or even if you know why the default changed, please let me know here.

Hi Egg-gineer,
Thank you for being an active member of the HP Support Community. I gather that until recently you could print 2-sided documents, flipping on the long edge, but now the printing flips on the short edge. In the end you’re having to read a document like it was attached to a clipboard instead of reading the document like a novel.
You indicated that this is occurring with more than one mobile device, so let’s start out with the printer and your network. Please restart your devices and check the network connections using the steps below (I copied them from the How to Use Apple's AirPrint Over a Wireless Network😞
Restart all devices and check network connections
- Turn off the router. Check with the router manufacturer for instructions on how to turn off the router.NOTE:Do not reset the router.
- Press the Power button to turn off the HP printer.
- Turn off the Apple device.
- Turn on the router, and then wait 30 seconds to let it complete its start-up process.
- Turn on the printer. Wait until the initialization process completes.NOTE:Do not turn on the Apple device yet.
- From the printer control panel, print a Network Configuration Report. Consult your manual for steps if you are unsure how to print this report.
- Check the Active Connection Type in the General Information section on the report. The connection type should be Wireless .
- Check the status in the 802.11 Wireless section on the report. The status should beConnected . The printer IP Address also displays in the 802.11 section of the report for active wireless connections.
- Make sure that the Network Name (SSID) on the report is the same as the name of the wireless network for your networked printer.
- If the HP printer is connected to the correct wireless network , continue to the next step.
- Turn your Apple device back on.
- Tap the Settings icon (
).
- Tap Wi-Fi .
- Make sure that Wi-Fi is set to On , and that there is a checkmark next to your wireless network name.
- Move your Apple device as close to the router as possible, but no closer than 6 ft (1.8 m).
- Return to the Settings menu, tap General , and then make sure that Bluetooth is set toOff .
- Try to print.
For interesting reading I’ve included a document from Macworld’s web site, How to track down Print Center in iOS 7. On the off chance that it is a setting on the iPad, please check the Print Center to see if binding happens to be set to short edge.

You got it- I like the clipboard description.
Followed the instructions, basically it's the old turn everything off and restart it trick, but that didn't fix the problem.
It seems strange to me that no-one else is having the same problem. Is there anyone out there reading this who uses AirPrint two-sided on an HP 5520 ? If so, how does it come out on your printer- long edge or short edge? And if it's on the long edge- do you have automatic updates turned on?
