I have the exact same issue, no scan through native software. USB and network scan is fine, but not to the computer itself, cable or wifi.
What is going on? Too expensive printer to be presenting these issues.

I have no idea what is going on with HP these days. Our firm used to use HP and nothing but HP in every location; for many, many years. As of late the quality and reliability has plummeted. I have an HP MFP M477fdw with the exact same problem. "The HP CLJM Scan was not found". NO SCANNING. I have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to resolve my issues with this MFP. Finally got the printer working by sneaking the new HP printer driver in while the install was taking place as suggested in the support forum. Thought that might fix my scanning problems. Nope. I am following along here.... feeling like a real dope. I am a $150 an hour IT professional, believe it or not. And I look after a huge wide area network. The original HP gear we bought was built like a tank and the software and drivers were marvellous. Why do I need to spend two full days getting things up and running when it should be taking me no more that ten minutes? And to see the HP Tech's GUESSING at what the solutions might be is not very reassuring. Someone at HP. AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN AT HP.... needs to hold designers and software folks accountable for what is being put out into the marketplace. Such a shame. Such a terrible shame.

COMPUTER 1: PC, Windows 10
Same insurmountable error with same error message. Stopped working 1-2 months ago.
Countless tries, installation, uninstallation, registry cleaning. HP_Color_LJ_Pro_MFP_M277-full-solution-15343.exe crashes always, also in Windows 10 safe mode.
Using old universal print driver instead, upd-pcl6-x64-6.3.0.21178.exe double-sided printing works, and HP Scan and capture works in all its primitiveness, but 3rd party ABBYY - the only intelligent and versatile and auto-correcting enough scan program, stopped working.
-------------------------
COMPUTER 2 (Surface Pro 4), Windows 10: only scanning works (ABBYY included), not printing.
-------------------------
COMPUTER 3: PC Windows 10: printing and scanning (ABBYY included) works.
So, who is guilty: it is easy to always blame Windows, but because about 150 other programs, many of them big, complicated programs, work in all these three computers, I consider the primary culprit is to be found in HP:s programming department, and the help from HP:s forum is pathetic.

After looking at all this stuff, I think I have found a solution (temporary or permanent, however you look at it). Of course, this only solves it for Windows users - sorry Apple-ites.
Microsoft has it's own verison of CLJM. Go get it and install it from
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/p/windows-scan/9wzdncrfj3pv
This allows double-sided scanning from the feeder, etc., etc.
Until HP gets off their duff and fixes their CLJM connectivity issue, this should serve you well. I plan do uninstall my CLJM.
Enjoy world!

How to Fix the HP Scanner Communication Problem – A Microsoft Issue, Not a Scanner Issue
(This has only been tested with Windows 10, but try it for Win 7 and 8. It also only works with the ‘Microsoft Scanner’ App. It does not fix the HP CLJM scnner software issue.)
- In Windows 10, right click the start button and select ‘Computer Management’. Another way to get to this is by right clicking on the ‘This PC’ icon (or ‘My Computer’ in earlier versions of Windows).
- Once Computer Management pops open, select ‘Services and Applications’ then ‘Services’.
- Scroll down the list and click on ‘Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)’. Double click on it to open a pane containing several tabs to open the ‘Properties’ menu.
- Select the ‘General’ tab and ensure the ‘Startup Type’ is set to ‘Automatic’.
- Select the ‘Recovery’ tab.
- Set the ‘First Failure’, ‘Second failure’, and ‘Subsequent failure’ pulldowns to
‘Restart the Service’. - After making the above changes, hit ‘Okay’ then close the ‘Computer Management’ window; the settings are saved. Now for an experiment...
- Turn off your printer. This will remove communication to the computer.
- Launch any scanner software, either Microsoft Scanner or HP CLJM. The scanner should show a communication failure.
- Turn the printer back on, let it fully initialize, and it should now communicate.
So far, this is the only fix that appears to be permanent. Time will tell…

I was eventually able to install HP Scan and Capture and get it to work by using the HP All in One utility app (free via Microsoft Store app). However, now the settings button in the app does not work. Also, the HP Scan and Capture App can see my M477fdw, but it says I need to install it to print, but it is already installed. I installed it again as the app directs, but the app still sees it and says it needs to be installed.
I would think HP would be embarrased to have such poorly functioning software and would have some concern about its impact on future sales.
