Hey everyone so I took a closer look at my install vs the one that wasn't working. Two things I did differently to make it work:
1) Install all the options. All the software. Hit every check button.
2) Makesure you are not installing it as an "IP" printer. It has to go through Bonjour.

I followed the reinstallation steps. Once reinstalled, the Print & Scan dialog box still showed the Kind of the printer to be "HP Officejet Pro 8600-AirPrint". Also, this did not cause an icon to show up in HP Utility app.
However, I did notice a Scan tab show up on the Print & Scan dialog box when the printer is selected that allowed me to scan a document successfully. Is this the primary means by which scans are to be done with this device on a Mac?
Cheers

There are different ways to scan, it's really your choice. I prefer to use image capture (under applications) myself.

A little different problem. Running OS 10.8.3. I have been able to get the 8600e to scan to a network folder on my Mac. However, i have only been able to do this by using the Mac network IP addresss (e.e. 192.168.1.). So it works for a while until I disconnect my Mac and then reconnect to the networkk, when a new IP address may be assigned.
I have tried the Netbioss namee an d the same shared folde r but it does nott wor

Setting a static IP for the Mac on that network should correct the problem. The tutorial below will walk you through the process. Hope that helps.
Beginner: How To Set Up A Static IP in Mac OS X

Setting up the static IP allowed me to scan from the 8600 printer to a folder on the Mac. However, with this setting I had no Internet connection for some reason. And, if I understand this correctly, I will need to remember to change locations (statis vs automatic) whenever I want to connect to a network ourside of my home office? If that is true, it is not really different than having to change the IP address for my Mac in the printer configuration on the few occasions when it is changes by the DNS server.

That is what you would need to do if you wanted to connect to a network outside of your home. The difference in doing it this way and changing it on the printer is that you can use Automator to change the settings on the Mac automatically, while you would always have to change the settings in the printer manually. If you are not familiar with Automator, you can find more information on it linked below.
