Uninstall and reinstall the software for this printer according to the package available for your OS on http://support.hp.com.
USB scanning requires scan drivers. The only way to get scan drivers is to check HPs downloads and drivers area for your OS. If scan drivers are not available in that area then you will need to perform MS updates and pull compatbile drivers from MS. Once you have drivers installed then you can use either HP scanning applications (full software solution) or 3rd party scan applications to complete your scan jobs.

M4555 is not designed to be used as a scanner via USB cable.
It can scan to a shared folder on the network when connected on the network or on USB stick you can plug in the device.
Additionally, with some extra software, you can scan from this device to your PC via TWAIN driver but only if connected to a network - not via USB cable.
This is medium workgroup MFP and it is primary function is on the network. If it is connected by USB cable, it can only print (plus copy and send faxes of course)

Hello,
The printer you are using is a HP Laserjet Enterprise M4555MFP which is actually a network printer/workstation machine.
Hence the scanning options available are listed below:
- Scan to Email
- Save-to-Network Folder
- Scan-to-USB
To configure the above listed the printer has to be connected on network and need to open printer webpage and configure.
You could also scan and save a job on thumbdrive which is known as Scan to USB ,however to enable to scan to usb the printer has to be connected on network, and open the printer webpage using printer IP address and refer to the image below:
