Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite

my hp envy 5530, which i've owned less than two months, is now constantly going offline. the only way it prints is when i turn it off and then on again. seems to go into sleep mode all the time. it DOES seem to default to the proper wifi network (same as my computer and devices). i'm running mac 10.10 (yosemite). this is frustrating enough that i will have to return the printer if there isn't a practical, permanent solution. thanks!

Hi @CalifKaren,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

I understand that your HP Envy 5530 printer keeps going offline running on Mac OS X 10.10. I am happy to help you with this connection issue!

Please, take a look through the following guides:

  1. 'Printer is offline' Message Displays on the Computer and the Printer Does Not Print: Mac OS X. (Follow the steps for OS X v10.8 Mountain Lion and OS X v10.9 Mavericks.)
  2. Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection.

Causes

The following factors can cause the printer to lose the wireless connection:

  1. The network connection is no longer active, or has low signal strength.
  2. The printer goes into sleep mode or standby mode.
  3. The printer is either too far away from the wireless router, or too close to it. The recommended distance between the printer and the router is 1.0 meter to 1.5 meters (3 ft to 5 ft).
  4. A firewall prevents the printer from accessing the computer and wireless network.
  5. A nearby device that emits radio signals (such as a microwave or cordless telephone) might interfere with the wireless connection.
  6. A virtual private network (VPN) prevents the printer from accessing the computer and wireless network.

Tips for preventing wireless connection issues

The following tips can help prevent wireless connection issues:

  1. Move the printer and the computer or access point (router) closer together.
  2. Remove any metal objects between the printer and the computer or access point (router). Objects such as refrigerators or metal bookcases can interfere with wireless transmission.
  3. Move any device that emits radio signals farther away from the printer. Devices such as microwaves and cordless telephones can interfere with wireless transmission.
  4. Consult the router manufacturer for updates and configuration of your router.
  5. Make sure that your computer is not connected through a VPN. You cannot access your printer on your wireless network while connected to a VPN.

I would also recommend that the printer's power cable is plugged directly into the wall outlet and not a surge protector, and that the firmware is up to date. Getting Printer Updates for HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3540, 4640, HP ENVY 4500, and HP Officejet 4630.... Also see this article, Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector. This applies to Inkjet printers as well.

Hope this information is helpful, and have a nice day! Smiley Happy

hello rnrmusicman,

thanks for the information. unfortunately, it doesn't solve my problem. with one exception, none of the problem causes are evident in my setup, and the printer was working fine until recently. the exception is that the printer is plugged into a ups (as it has been since i purchased it). every printer i have had in the past (incl several hp ones) was connected this way, without issue. and i don't have an accessible outlet to use otherwise given the printer's location. so, if that is the only remaining option, i will have to take my printer back to the store and avoid hp printers in the future (and cancel my instant ink subscription as well). i wish hp had made this very clear in the packaging  -- or admit it's a bug and fix it. (i know you didn't cause this but it's really frustrating).

cheers.

Hi CalifKaren,

One other option is to make sure there are no ports being blocked between the router and the printer. Please see this post, Incoming and Outgoing Printer Ports, by @VisionAiry. You can do this by contacting your router manufacturer.

Hope this helps, and have a good day! :generic:

Found this forum when trying to keep my printer online too. I have new Envy 5530 that kept going offline and I installed and reinstalled and it would work for about 15 minutes. I discovered that it was a problem only with the computer and not with either the  iPad or iPhone airprint though so deduced that something in the printer settings on the computer had to be wrong, but what?

I remembered that when I first installed the printer that the program said that I might have issues if file and printer sharing wasn't enabled and did I want the program to enable the setting? I clicked yes and didnt think anything else about it until I was going through all my computer settings (brand new Windows 10 computer that I bought with the printer and I wanted to tweak a few things). Guess what? File and printer sharing was NOT turned on. Turned it on and have had absolutely no problem since, although I admit it's only been a week. You'll find it in the Control Panel. In Windows 10 it is in the "Network and Sharing Center." There is a menu bar on the left side: click on "change advanced settings." From there, enable "file and printer sharing," scroll down and click on "save changes." Hope this helps.

On a hunch, I went thru the settings ON my HP Envy and discovered that there is a setting to put it to sleep after 5, 10, and 15 minutes... and no *%#@!!! way to disable or turn it off!  So every time I wish to print from my HP Stream notebook, I have to get up and go into the next room and turn off the wif-fi, wait a minute, turn it back on, and then go back to my computer to continue what I was doing.... STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!
