Here is how I do it with Windows 7 (1) Step 1 which does not work. I review all the menu items on the printer until I remember that what I am looking for is not there. (2) Step 2 which does not work. I review the printer manual and don't find any directions on how to scan (3) Step 3 which DOES work for me. - Plug in my Windows 7 laptop to the printer using the USB cable - Click on the start button and select Control Panel on the right side menu column. - Change the top right view by option to small icons - Click on Devices and Printers in the middle menu column - Right click on the HP Officejet 4500 G510g-m icon and use the scan menu items which will not be there unless the printer is connected to the laptop with the serial cable. The options from printer icon work well, my issue is that it is not particularly user friendly to get there and mostly that no place in the printer / scanner documentation did I find how to do this. My printer is not normally connected to a network or a computer - we use it mostly for copying and faxing, so I don't know if the network might make this easier. Also, I remind myself that I got into this when I went to buy ink for the old HP printer / scanner and found it cheaper to buy the new printer / scanner than the ink for the old one. If we use the printer very much, most of the cost is for the ink and not the hardware for a period of time. I can't help wondering what brand of good printer has the cheapest ink cost. Sigh - until I decide to scan something again and have to remember the above. Best wishes.

I want to scan off my HP4500 officejet printer onto my apple computer.  Please give me instructions.  printer screen shows "no scan options."

I had same problem from same printer to Apple computer. Here is how I solved the problem.

1. Open - System preference - desktop-bottom of page-grey square with gears

2. Click - print & scan

3. What page should look like - left side - you will see "printer" in grey box. Under it, it should read ".idle"

4. Click - scan

5. Click - open scanner (printer will scan)

6. Click on: Name - and name document O.K.

If printer is "paused" it will not scan - check grey box with printer photo.

1. Right click over grey bar

2. Click "RESET" printing system

3. Accept - "all existing documents will be deleted" - this is O.K.

4. Page will ask for your computer password tht was given when purchased

5. Click the "plus", not the "minus" box under white page

6. Left click the name of you printer and click "add"

7. Printer "reset" will say "idle". This corrected the "paused" problem.

8. It is ready to scan again

9. Click - picture of "a lock" on the bottom left corner to "lock and unlock" printer change mode.

10. The main problem with this printer is it jumps off ".idle" to "pause".

Good luck!
