Is there anything I can do to enable my hp photosmart S20 photo scanner on my new laptop running Windows 7 Pro-64bit? I really want to use it as it has been a good work horse and very helpful!

Hello Savvygal,

I understand you would like to use your HP Photosmart s20 with your Windows 7 Operating system, the most current compatible drivers for the s20 are the Windows XP drivers. There are no drivers or software for the Windows 7 OS.

Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836 to see what upgrade options they may have for you. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpsupport/index.pl

Thanks,

I AM HAVING THE SAME TROUBLE WITH THE PHOTOSMART S-20 SCANNER.  I JUST SWITCHED TO WINDOWS 7 ON A NEW COMPUTER,  AND IT WOULD NOT SEE THE SCANNER WHEN I TRIED TO RUN THE SOFTWARE.

MICROSOFT SUPPORT WAS TOTALLY CLUELESS.  WHAT ELSE IS NEW?

SO I LOCATED ULTIMATE TECH SUPPORT AT 1-800 820 6687.  THEY CHARGED $180 US TO FIX THE PROBLEM - UP FRONT.  THEY GAVE A 90 DAY GUARANTEE.  THEIR SOLUTION WAS TO CREATE A VIRTUAL WINDOWS XP "MACHINE" ON THIS COMPUTER.  THEN THEY SOMEHOW RE INSTALLED THE ONLY EXISTING DRIVERS FOR THE SCANNER.  THE DRIVERS ARE PS 803 AND PS 804 FROM THE YEAR 2002.  YOU DON'T NEED PS 803: IT JUST STARTS PS 804.

THIS WAS DONE YESTERDAY.  TODAY IF FIND THAT THE SCANNER WILL ONLY SCANN IN THE 5 X 7 PRINT MODE.  IN THE SLIDE AND FILM MODE HALF OF THE IMMAGE IS A BUNCH OF LITTLE SQUARES OF DIFFERENT COLORS.

I WILL SEE TOMORROW IF THEY HONOR THEIR GUARANTEE.  IF NOT I WILL STOP PAYMENT USING MY VISA CARD.  SO BE SURE TO USE A CARD THAT PERMITS YOU TO STOP OR REVERSE A PAYMENT IF YOU USE THESE PEOPLE.

IF ANYONE OUT THERE HAS ANY INFORMATION AS TO HOW TO REALLY FIX THIS PROBLEM, PLEASE E-MAIL ME AT

I HOPE THE ABOVE IS HELPFUL TO SOMEONE.  I AM SURE NOT HAPPY WITH THE SITUATION, BECAUSE NO ONE MAKES A PHOTO SCANNER ANYMORE.   I HAVE AN EPSON FLAT BED SCANNER WHICH I AM GOING TO EXPERIMENT WITH TO SEE IF I CAN SCAN SLIDES AND FILM ON THAT.  I AM NOT REAL CONFIDENT THAT  IT IWLL WORK.

Now that official support for XP is going away, moving the S20 scanner to standard Windows 7 (or 😎 has increased in importance.  The Windows 7 XP Mode site has the same warning as the normal XP site, effectively placing the XP Mode solution in the same "non solution" boat as normal XP (for those that want to run in a supported environment).  I expect to see an increase in the number of people that search for a solution and continue to wish that HP would kindly release a driver for the native Windows 7 environment.

After Microsoft demonstrated that they are clueless about how to make Photosmart run in windows 7,  I contacted a company called e-computer support.  They fixed the problem by introducing a method of inducing windows 7 to oporate in XP mode.

The solution works about half of the time.  When it fails, I have to do a COLD re-boot switch to simulated XP mode load the photosmart drivers and try again.

YOU ARE SO CORRECT THAT HP SHOULD ISSUE AN UPDATE TO THE ps 804 en DRIVER.  HOWEVER, MY OPINION OF HP IS THAT THEY HAVE GONE THE WAY OF ALL POLITICIANS AS WELL AS ALL COMPUTER COMPANIES.  THEY CARE NOT ONE FLIP ABOUT THEIR REPUTATION AS LONG AS THEY CAN RIP THE WORLD OFF BY NOT UPDATING THE SOFTWARE.  THIS SEMI CRIMINAL BEHAVIOUR WAS INVENTED BY DETRIOT IN THE 1920'S.  IT HAS BECOME THE MANTRA OF CORPORATE AMERICA AS WELL AS ALL POLITICIANS AROUND THE WORLD AND ESPECIALLY IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

If you want to use your HP Photosmart S20 in Windows 7/8/8.1, you will need a third party solution. VueScan has been around for many years and is a superior replacement for most any scanning software, and it supports the HP S20. Yes, there is a cost but much cheaper than buying a new dedicated film/slide scanner. It is x64 compatable.

Vuescan only supports the PhotoSmart S20 with the S20's drivers.  Vuescan ads make it look like it will make the S20 usable in other operating systems (after XP) but when you install Vuescan... it says it cannot detect the scanner and when you dig deeper for more details, it says it must have the latest driver for the S20... which is, obviously, the XP drivers... which will NOT install in Windows 8.1.

Yeah, I found that out after I downloaded and paid for it. I wrote them a very blatant letter to the fact that the page is very misleading.  I have an XP machine I'm going to hook it to and use VueScan for the interface. Should do what I want it to then.  But not what I intended to do.....

And I set up a dual-boot of full XP (after Win 8.1) just for use of the S20 scanner.

Had to download updated driver/software... the included S20 software disk wouldn't install ...hopefully updates will.

VueScan works perfectly fine with an old Adaptec 2940 SCSI card under Windows 7 Prof and even under Windows 10 64Bit Prof.   The trick is to get the SCSI installed as there is no digitally signed driver from Adaptec.

You can use a Windows Vista 64 bit driver search for djsvs.inf in the internet and how to get such driver installed in W7 and W10. As soon the SCSI card works ScanVue will recognize the Photosmart S20 with all Vuescan functions.
