VueScan works perfectly fine with an old Adaptec 2940 SCSI card under Windows 7 Prof and even under Windows 10 64Bit Prof.   The trick is to get the SCSI installed as there is no digitally signed driver from Adaptec.

You can use a Windows Vista 64 bit driver search for djsvs.inf in the internet and how to get such driver installed in W7 and W10. As soon the SCSI card works ScanVue will recognize the Photosmart S20 with all Vuescan functions.

So it sounds like you HAVE TO install the physical SCSI card - is that correct?

Either way  really appreciate you posting this!!!

druidix,

I have the USB S20, not the SCSI version, so that option will not work for mine.

Sorry i forgot that there are different S20 versions. My s20 is the Model with a SCSI-2 Interface that was introduced before the usb-version. After the Adaptec SCSI driver was working under W10 Vuescan recognised the S20 without any further interaction. It is still working after the first major w10 update in Nov. 2015.  I have no USB S20 scanner so i do not know if Vuescan is a fix as well. For the SCSI version it's a perfect 64 bit solution for  W7-W10 Prof.

Here's what I did on my computer - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bits Service Pack 1 - today:
Warning: my computer speaks Dutch. I translated its comments to English to the best of my knowledge.
Some of the texts below could well be a little different on your - English speaking - computers.

  1. Do not connect the scanner to the PC.
  2. Reboot the PC, press f8 (quickly) while booting to get into the Windows boot startup.
  3. Choose the option to ignore checking driver signatures (option near the bottom).
  4. After booting, connect the scanner.
  5. Go to configuration, select 'device manager'.
  6. Select the S20 scanner in the list of devices.
  7. In 'properties' select 'driver' followed by 'update'.
  8. Select 'search my computer' (the second option).
  9. Select the option at the very top ('select all devices' or something similar) and wait a while.....
10. In the left little 'window' find Hewlett-Packard.
(I see some 5 'options' here: Hewlett-Packard (twice), Hewlett-Packard Company, HP, HP Computer Corporation).
11. Select the second from the list (Hewlett-Packard).
12. In the right little 'window' select Photosmart C5200 (without (DOT4USB)).
13. Install/Update this driver (ignore the warning 'not digitally signed' or words to that effect).
14. Shut down the PC.
15. Unplug the scanner.
16. Reboot the PC.
17. Install psu804en.exe, available from the link below.
18. During installation when asked to connect the scanner, do so and ignore the error 'lost communication'.
19. Reboot the PC.
20. Start the S20 software (and calibrate the scanner, I suggest - under 'Properties')

This worked for me. Hope it does for you too.

Greetings from the low country, Jaap Vegter.

I found the best solution (and I've used this on three computers) is to install VMware Player. And then install Windows XP in the player. Of course, that means that you will need a Windows XP installation disk.

This allows you to run Windows XP in a desktop window in a "virtual session."

You also could install and run Linux in a virtual session, too, while you are booted/logged into Windows 7.

After installing Windows XP, install the HP software for the scanner.

This is an underappreciated scanner and is perfect for slides, negatives (b/w and color) and snapshots.

I've used VMware Player for about three years and haven't run into any problems.

I've used that option before (XP mode in Windows 7). Since upgrading my PC, I don't want to have to install a VM just to use a scanner. It's too bad that someone can't come up with a solution that works with a newer OS.

It does take some work to install WInXP on a virtual machine. However, this scanner was made in 1999.

I think of computer years being similar to dog years, which makes this 17-year-old scanner 119 years old (in computer/dog years). And we sometimes expect ongoing support for really old computer hardware that 99% of the public has forgotten about or never knew existed.

I had the first version with the proprietary SCSI board, and I remember how much I enjoyed using it.

I bought the second version a few years ago, and I still enjoy using it, running in a VMware Player.

I've had the same issue with an Epson Expression 1600, which has no support under 64-bit Windows. It's a workhorse and works without any issues. Where's my 64-bit support, Epson?

Once again, VMWare Player to the rescue. You never have to exit your Win7 session. And you can run WinXP in a small window, slid off to the side or to a second monitor - if you have such a setup.

Currently, I'm running several computers via LXLE Linux, and I'm looking to see if I can get the S20 to run without a VM. I'm thinking that's probably what I'll have to do.

The one thing that I do is to set up a "scans" folder on the Win7 computer and share that folder with the VM. So when I scan in WinXP and then shut down the session, my scans aren't locked in the WinXP VM. They're right there.

HP Recommended

Yeah, that's exactly how I was doing it. Shared folder on the host. My big issue is I'm running Win10 and it makes it a hair harder to get an XP VM. Since Win10 is now using HyperV instead of VM, I was having issues with the shared USB port seeing the scanner.  Plus, being in the tech world, XP leaves the VM vulnerable. I may give it a try again tho.
