I received a message that an operation took too long to execute and I can't install my printer.  I have received this message from the CD that came with the product and from the downloaded software from HP.

I used the solution in the support forum to install my HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401n on my stand alone computer.  I followed th einstructions but the printer software and driver downloaded from HP did not work.  Does any one have any other suggestions?

I have HP Laserjet Pro 400 color MFP m475dw. I tried using the CD to install printer and it didn't work. Then I downloaded the driver from website and it didn't work. During all times the process is completed till 99% and then it gives fatal error. I have run as an Administrator with no luck. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks .

HP's garbage.  it only works when it feels like it.

Not only did htis solution not work, but why is HP allowing resellers to sell printers for which HP has stopped supporting since 2013?  I also find it ironic that no one had mentioned upgrading to Windows 10 where the printer driver exists and works.  The drivers on the HP web site do not work and the drivers on the enclosed CD/DVD will not install.  I am in the software business and I have never seen such a piece of junk software that willnot work anywhere.  They need to go back and re-engineer the software so that it works with all operating systems and does not sit in idle all the time.  I may sound miffed, but this should not happen.

Hi all,

I was racking my brains for over 7 hours across three different user visits before I finally cracked the cause of this issue!

Background:

Printer worked fine previously on an older XP box without any issues.  The new Win 7 box was another story though!

I tried swapping USB cables, tried two bespoke drivers (LaserJet Pro 400 M401)  plus the HP Universal Printer PCL6 Driver and even, in desparation re-imaged the PC but none of this made a difference.  Timeout error every time.

In the end I deduced that the problem obviously lies with some kind of USB incomaptibility and suspected that the issue may be being caused by the fact that the printer is detected as USB flash storage as well as a printer.

Solution:

So, I started looking at the printer side to see if there was some way of disabling the embedded (not so) 'Smart Install' flash storage feature.  Sure enough, in the Setup Menu of the printer there is a setting for 'Smart Install' On/Off.

I disabled this feature and *voila* the printer then showed up in device manager and then running the standard driver installer (removing cable and re-inserting again when instructed by the installer) allowed the printer to install and complete correctly! 🙂

BASICALLY - Turn *OFF* the 'Smart Install' in your printer's Setup menu and you should find that the downloaded HP driver installers now work as intended.

I also recommend updating the Printer firmware to the 2015 version too (mine previously had 2012 embedded).

Hope this saves someone else the headache I experienced to get here! 😉

I noticed that there is a problem Windows 7 installs some HP BDI printer or something and non-existent scanner driver, remove those from the device management.  To get to install process, get the install cd where are real driver files (there was a version of install cd that had only "Setup.exe" that is unuseful) you should somehow get the usb port visible to the windows system, install new printer and point this cd driver files folder to this usb port and you should be running.  It took 3-4 hours to solve this problem.
