I have the same problem with my customer's Laserjet M1212nf - I downloaded & installed the printer driver on a new PC & it automatically installed a firmware update that caused the printer to reboot constantly. The fixes described in this forum did not work for me.
Why are firmware updates being automatically installed by the driver install package?
The phone support tech tried to tell me that the firmware update is completely separate from the driver & that there are no problems with the firmware update, which is obviously not true as demonstrated by all ofthe people in this forum with exactly the same issue.

I just fixed this problem.
Remove toner cartridge (this will get it out of the fax initializing error mode).
Press the Wrench button on the device and find "Fax Functions" and press "OK" button then find "Clear Saved Faxes" and press "OK".
For full instructions, see my post today.
Hi,

HP is working to find the root cause of this issue. The latest software online, however, will install correctly because the current version of the embedded Firmware Update Utility has been removed. A corrected and revised version of the Firmware Update Utility will be available as soon as the issue is resolved.
In the meantime, we recommend not using the current Firmware Update Utility if the ePrint feature is not used on your printer. If it’s necessary to update your printer firmware, please use a USB connection and ensure the power supply is stable. HP apologizes for the inconvenience.

Three years later and the newest online drivers still load in a firmware update that breaks the printer. Why was this not removed from the install untility?
After my printer had been used with no problems on Windows machines for a few years, I loaded the newest software onto one of my Macs. I chose not to do the firmware update at that time since I wanted to know what was included in the update. The printer continued to work perfectly over usb and ethernet. Then, yesterday, I loaded the newest driver again on the other Mac, and this time I did the firmware update because I didn't notice that it was starting to load this time as I was flying through the fax setup screens. And that put the printer in the endless initialization loop that no solution will fix. Why is this update still even available when it has killed huge numbers of printers. There should not have even been a firmware to update to if it was going to do this.
HP support was also not help, even though she kindly tried to help for free. But she didn't even know the correct buttons to press to do a hard reset (told me the wrong ones).
Shame on HP for continuing to release software that bricks products. Now it is intentional since they admitted to knowing of this problem several years ago.
If I can't get someone to fix this printer, I am never using HP again. This HP was the replace another HP inkjet that suddenly had a carriage jam two weeks ago and cannot be resolved. And that one replaced another inkjet model that had the same problem. Plus the inkjets ink cartridges dry up after only a few weeks of non-use (the auto-cycle feature doesn't work). Other brands don't do that.
