After upgrading to windows 10 (64 bit) scanning function fails to operate. I reinstalled program and it worked for 5 days There were a number of Microsoft updates and I observed that the scanner function failed. The scanner interface indicates that it is unable to communicate but the scanner light operates and the scanner moves across the flatbed. Both printer and faxing functions operate. Either the drivers for the the scanner are not compatible or there is a security issue communicating back to the computer preventing generation of an OCR image. The multi-funtion printr is on a LAN network.

I tried with another computer (operating system windows 7) which is connected wirelessly and the scanning function in color worked. In addition I installed HP Scan and Capture application available for free from Microsoft store and it works in color on my computer. As you remember the interface for the HP Laserjet 1536 dnf works in B&W and greyscale in all dpi settings I will wait for an update for the drivers from HP and when I require color use HP Scan and Capture software

Hi @Alan1836,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I see that you're unable to scan with your HP Laserjet 1536 Printer. I would be happy to help you and please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution' if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. If you wish to say 'thanks' for my effort to help, click the 'thumbs up' to give me a Kudos.
I understand how frustrating this must be for you. There are many reasons why this could be happening.
Are all of the Windows Updates complete on the computer?
Please download and run the Print and Scan Doctor, it will likely diagnose and resolve the issue you are experiencing.
- What were the results when you ran the Print and Scan Doctor (did it print or scan, any error messages)?
Another community member was having a similar issue, please try the solution below.
I was able to solve my issue with my scanner after installing Windows 10 by correcting the permissions for the user. I don't know why Windows 10 install changed it, and the error message in no way indicated this was the issue, but after a lot of trial and error, this fixed it.
Go to the folder where your scanner saves the document/image.
Right click > Properties
Security tab
Select Home User group or your current user from the list of user names, click 'Edit'. Change checkmarks to 'Allow', click 'Apply'.

In addition, please try the steps within these guides (follow Windows 8 as a guideline):
- A 'No Computer Detected' or 'Connection Error' Message Displays during Scanning for HP Officejet 750...
- HP Printers - Network Scanner Connection is Lost (Windows).
Alternatively, you can try HP Scan and Capture app or Windows Scan app.
Please respond to this post with the result of your troubleshooting. I look forward to hearing from you. Good Luck!

I tried everything you suggested including HP Print and Scan . I just realized when I reduced the rsolution to grayscale or black and white up to 300 dpi that the scanner functions with the HP interface and worked perfectly with several scanning programs that I use . For color it failed to communicate even though the scanner moved across the scanning bed. Perhaps HP needs to update the scanner drivers for Windows 10 . For the moment it is operational since I require mainly black and white and grey scale images. Any suggestions for it to be fully operational?

This is a further observation that I made . I can scan in black and white and greyscale even at higher dpi as well (600 dpi but when I select color then the scanner fails to connect . I think that HP needs to upgrade their drivers for the scanner or there might be some other issue.

Hi @Alan1836,
Thanks for getting back to me.
Does HP Scan and Capture app or Windows Scan app do the same thing?
The driver got corrupted, so we will need to remove it and reinstall.
Please follow the steps in this guide, HP Printers - Printer Problems after Upgrading to Windows 10.
If the issue persists, follow these steps to see if you can resolve the issue.
We are going to start by cleaning your computer up.
- Disk cleanup in Windows 10
- Perform Clean Boot in Windows 10 / 8 / 7
- Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files. It is always a good idea to back up your data before proceeding.
- System file check (SFC) Scan and Repair System Files & DISM to fix things SFC cannot.
Uninstall and reinstall the HP Software.
If you're using a USB Cable connection between your printer and computer please disconnect that cable now.
Step 1: Remove Printer:
We will want a clean slate to install your printer with on the Windows 10 computer. Therefore, I am going to have you ensure no trace of your HP LaserJet. is currently showing installed on your computer.
1. Click on your Start button
2. Just type Programs and Features. If a search doesn't automatically start, you may need to type Programs and Features in the 'Ask me Anything' box.
3. Click Programs and Features to launch the window.
4. In Programs and Features, a list of programs installed on your computer will populate. Please scroll down the list and look for your HP LaserJet. If you see your HP LaserJet listed, click it and choose Uninstall.
5. Please follow any onscreen prompts to complete the uninstall. Once the uninstall has completed successfully please close Programs and Features.
6. Next, click on your Start menu again
7. This time, type Devices
8. Click Devices and Printers to launch the window.
9. In Devices and Printers look for your HP Deskjet. If you see if please right-click on it and choose 'Remove' or 'Delete'
10. Once your HP LaserJet is no longer showing in Devices and Printers please click on any device under the Printers list once just to highlight it. Click Print Server Properties at the top
11. Click on the Drivers tab
12. Look for your HP Deskjet driver. If listed, please click on it and choose Remove
13. Select Remove Driver Only
14. Select OK
15. Click Apply and OK under the Print Server Properties window.
16. Close Devices and Printers. Please proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Install Device:
- Please click here to download the Full Feature Software and Driver download for your printer
- Once the download is complete please follow the onscreen prompts to install your printer
- If using a USB Cable connection, leave the cable disconnected until the installer prompts you to connect it
Once the install is complete please test printing and scanning.

If the issue persists, you can try the solution offered in the thread below.
1) Open the Command Prompt window by clicking the Start > All apps > Windows System > Command Prompt.
Type: net stop spooler <hit enter>
Type: net start spooler <hit enter >
Type: exit <hit enter >
2) Open Windows Explorer and navigate to:
%systemroot%\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86
NOTE: %systemroot% is usually C:\Windows, but it might be "winnt" or something else; this is set when the OS is installed. Most systems are like this C:\Windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86
3) Inside the w32x86 folder, there will be other folders and files. Delete everything inside but DO NOT delete the w32x86 folder.
4) Restart the computer - Perform Clean Boot in Windows 10 / 8 / 7

Tried all but did it not work however I did try uninstalling again and checked my router (Asus AC66U ) for the IP address of the Laserjet 1536 and did see all of the details of the printer which corresponds to the same details on HP toolbox in the system tray when it is installed. My theory is how to clear all the settings in the multifunction printer itself so that it is clean I tried looking in the printers menu on the printer itself in order to reset the printer to factory default settings but couldn't find. I also noticed the printer driver version is 61.101.10.8561 Type 3 but as I said before it is only the scanner function when set in color is not operational but functions perfectly in B&W and grayscale. Previosly in Windows 7 I could scan and save a color pictue as PDF file or JPEG

Hi @Alan1836,
Thanks for getting back to me. I'm trying to determine if the issue is hardware or software/driver related.
Can you try setting the printer on a different computer?
I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
- Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
- Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector. This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
- Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet (don't use a power hub or a surge protector)? This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
Please update the printer's firmware. Click here for the download page.
I can send you the instructions to perform the NVRAM Reset, I set the printer back to factory settings. I can send you that information in a private message. In the forum beside your handle name just click on the envelope to view it.
If you completed all the preceding steps and your product still has an issue, service the product.
Contacting HP for service in all countries/regions except Asia Pacific.
First, go to Check your product warranty to check your printer warranty status, and then go to Contact HP Support to find an authorized service dealer or to schedule a repair.
Repair fees might apply for out-of-warranty printers.
What you can do, is use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on: HP contact options - click on Get phone number
Case number and phone number appear.
Please respond to this post with the results. Good Luck! 🙂
