What codes are you looking for?  For warranty purposes the warranty date is printed on the side of the 950 or 951 cartridges as shown in the document here.  Codes from someone else's cartridges would not apply for your warranty.

Why would  any codes that are not old and expired not work when dealling with Tech support. all they do is run down a list of suggestions from the internet and talk you through them. They will not give me a casae number until they can documant ccurrent pripnter cartridge codes.

Is it a crime to use another person ink codes?

It may be, if fraudulently using them to obtain service under false pretenses.

Let's try a different tactic:  Please read this post then provide some details.  What printer model? What operating system?  Are there any error messages on the printer or computer screen?  If you post your question with the problem you are trying to solve someone here may be able to help.

printer only shows a "printer failure" message. turn of and on , and if problems persits contact HP. However you can not call HP out of warenty.  No other options on the printer work. it will not ciopy , fax or receive.  I can not change the screen to any commands or even try to reset to factory defaults.  I can not chaneg formn teh desktop command or the LCD screen.

It is stuck in Printer failure. I've succesfully celaned the print head in the past when running the printer cleaning function did not work. I prpobably ruined the printer by shutting it off for the month that I was away, and the printer coudl not run its normal maintennce porgram. Cleaning the headsd did nothing to remove the "printer failure " messge.

The tech rep ( sounded like a newbie) had no reason to askl for codes on my ink, probaly just wanted to knwo if they were authentic HP ink, but didn't knwo how to ask.  Any other sugestions to fix this would be appreciated. .

What printer model? What operating system? Turning the printer off for a month should not be a problem, if the printer was turned off from the printer and not an external switch or by removing the power cord.  I had an Officejet Pro 8600 Plus that I set up, then put in storage for a year.  I was pleasantly surprised when I returned it to service, I plugged it in and the first page printed was fine without requiring any manual cleaning.  My printer uses the same 950/951 print cartridges.  Are you using HP cartridges or third party?

The troubleshooting steps in the document here may help resolve the printer failure message.  If not, please give some more details:

  • What printer model?
  • What operating system?
  • Are the ink supplies HP or refill/reman?
  • If you open the cartridge access door do the cartridges move into position or are they stuck on the right side?

HP ofice jet 8600 , windows 7 operating system , using HP cartidges,  after the warretny ran out I used off brand refills , but after having problems , when I cleaned the heads my self, I swithced back to HP ink , with no problems for over a year.

Until now. And it was printing fine for a few weeks after i returned from my trip. Just as i was printing for the third time one morning it froze into the perpeetual starte of "printer failure"

I would start with the troubleshooting steps in the document here.

If that does not resolve the issue and IF the printhead is accessible when you open the access door I would suggest removing the cartridges, then removing the printhead. Soak the printhead in hot water as shown in step 8 or the document here.  (This is for a different printer series, but the soaking  procedure would be the same.)  After soaking and drying the printhead put it back in the printer and then reinsert the ink cartridges.

I did that , from YOU TUBE videos, it was not succesful. And  new print head costs as much $99.00, as the new 8710 , similar replacement that comes with a full supply ( not teh 10% set up cartridges) $111.99 at Office depot.

Thanks for all of your help
