jOffice jet 8500
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I recently replaced the 3 color and one black ink cartridges with the correct ones. Now it only prints in black ink, the color wont print. I purchased the ink from HP several years ago and I did get an "out of date" message on all of them. But that should not stop the printer from printing in color. Yes the back has the same date as the color and it still prints in black. Why won't, and how I get it to print in color?

Hi kthec,

When you save the cartridges for a long time they will probably dry or just not work (I am not an expert in cartridges)
But when you buy them new and use them directly it needs to work.
Or you just printed in black :smileywink:.
Here you can find some info and maybe see if you stored it wrong:

Thanks for the response but that article is about toner cartridges, not INk.

You must have a A909 in the model number you didn't mention.

Try here.

Hi,

Check this article for inkjet cartridges: http://smallbusiness.chron.com/long-hp-inkjet-cartridge-last-not-opened-62829.html

Thanks, that article goes into more detail than a couple of others posted earlier by other folks. I think I just didn't use my 8500 all in one enough. I am going to try an experiment. I'll clean the ink cartridges with alcohol, and check the ink lines to see if they are dried out. If so I will flush those with alcohol as well and see what happens. I bought several cartridges of each color, and black way back in 2010, and didn't realize they could dry out. I plan on retireing in a couple more years and don't really want to buy a new printer for my office. I do really appreciate everyone's help here!

Thanks, sabertooth..... (glad you didn't go extinct with the rest of 'em )

Thanks Yoloserver, that does help a lot. I guess I just need to throw away about 10 cartridges and go buy some new ones.... ouch. They are just old I suppose.

Hi,

Does your printer even last that long ( 7 Years )?

Hope the alcohol experiment works, I'll support you on this one. Succes :catvery-happy::smileyvery-happy:

Yea, I'll let you know. On one of them, I poked a hole in the ink cartridge, and that didn't help. I am the creative type and like experiments. -OH  (-OH is alcohol) may thin things out enough to work. Fun times....
