I removed the covers from my 6500 and found a lever looking part laying on the right side and slipped it back in place then I pusshed on another arm that lifts the print head assembly up off of the resting place then I was able to access the waste ink area where the priming and head cleaning is done. Like it has been described as a drawer of sorts. Well that drawer should be able to slide if it is a drawer. Mine did not move. Plus I wasn't sure exactly which way it would be moving if it could, so I looked at the way things are made and saw a notch that was placed in the plastic above the drawer and if the entire mechanism is moved over to line up the ears that stick up from that drawer and then pushed it back. It took several tries and some wiggeling to get it to move back away from the position it was stuck in.

Once I had it moving I still was getting a general error, I took the printer and tipped it upside down a shook it, a small plastic ear looking part fell out, (as well as the left hand part that all the cables run through which then disconnected them all) the ear part was clearly broken and I have no idea where it came from. I then took the part that was loose back out to see if it was from that part and noticed that the part has a few gears in it. Upon closer inspection I saw that there is a spce for another gears or possibly a spring that was missing. There is also something missing from the other lever thyat lifts the enitre carige.

It has a pin that is on the end that would move it but there's nothng connected to that pin so I have no idea what should all be part of that assembly.

The main thing is that the carrige now moves and the printer will turn on and offer printing which it would never do before. It just starts to run the self tests and it errors after it's done but says hit OK and does the same thing.

Good luck I'm hunting for a diagram of the left side to see what parts might be missing.

Photosmart 6520:  I had the cartridge stuck in the right side.  It's a disassemble project.  I believe it is the cleaning device that is located UNDER the print head is what holds up the cartridge.  You cannot see this until the print head is removed.

The Cleaning device moves back to front of the printer, perpendicular to the cartridge.  With enough ink build up, the cleaning device gets stuck in the "UP" position and blocks the cartridge from moving.  It is supposed to go down and back.

So I had to remove about 8 star point screws (T10).  The lid has a latch on the side that you need to take off.  The lid actually comes off rather easy when the latch is removed.  When detatching the print head, there are FOUR cables that come out.  If you remove the lid, there is another.  I have to hand it to the design of those, they are just a stiff tape but go right back in place.  The smallest tape cable was a little hard because the cable is short, I used some small needle nose plyers to put that back in place.

I cleaned up all the ink and crude on this print head (messy).  I made sure it was movable front to back; it ONLY has about an inch of travel.  But that frees up the cartridge.

45 min job, back up and running on the first shot.  This, of course, was an hour of frustration diagnosing the issue before I committed to tear it apart.

Sounds like you did some good troubleshooting and repair.  I started taking mine apart and then decided I had better things to do, and bought a new HP Envy 7640 which I like very much.  More power to you!
