I'm having the same problem with lines, and I've tried unplugging it from the surge protector, waiting several minutes and then plugging it into the wall.  It did not remove the lines.  If you can help, please let me know.  Thanks, Kryste H.

I unplug AC cable from the HP 8600 and walloutlet. Open printer cover and wipe "all" glass area with dry dinner napkins, including left side glass. Open printer top cover and place a document on glass. Close top cover and select "black" then select copy. The copy should show "no" black vertical line. Now place another document in the paper feeder and select black and press copy. The new copy did not show the vertical blacl line. What is the logic? I don't really know why the  black vertical disappear.

Good luck!

My HP8600 has been printing a black vertical line during auto loading for months. Tried all methods of unplugging. I discovered the small glass at the left side of the manual loader had a paper speck on this glass. It required scrapping it off carefully and cleaning. The manual loader is using this glass to make copies and is rather rough, especially on originals, and sometimes taking small specks of paper off the original. Overtime they deposit on the glass. I have to clean it everytime I see this line.

To all who help solve this copy/fax "black lines" issue; thank you very much.  This solution saved me from buying a replacement printer.

I am having this problem of black vertical lines printing on the page when I am copying.  It's like the paper is dragging up against something.  I don't know how to fix this problem.  My printer is plugged directly into the wall so it can't be that.  Please help.  This printer is not under warranty anymore

Does this occur only when you copy or scan from the document feeder?  Try making a copy from the flatbed glass.  If this works then the issue is a smudge or spot on the thin (about 1" wide) glass on the left side that is used for the ADF.  Clean this glass to resolve the issue as shown in solution three, figure six in the document here.

The page here shows how to clean this area.

Thank you so much. I cleaned the glass and it worked. No more lines.

Earth to HP... Could you please send a firmware update that corrects the unplug/plug in reset related black line? I don't care if it resets itself every night as long as it resets and clears the issue. This is not rocket science, over...

It worfked before by unplugging, but now the vertical lines are back with a vengence.  Worse than before.  What can be done  to permanently resolve this problem?

This 8600 machine is only 4 months old.  PLEASE HELP!!

Where do I find directions for cleaning the glass strip on the ADF?
