I have an officejet 6310 all in one multi function printer. i have vista ultimate. My scanner has been working (last time used may have been last weekend - 3 or 4 days ago. now all functions except the scanner work from the hp solutions center. When I tried to scan today, initially I had a "The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package scan msi in the box below". I clicked cancel and an error box shows Error 1706. Following info from the hp forum i went to start/run %temp%/7z57af.tmp/setup/scan - the folder was empty. Next i followed instruction for uninstalling my software using the hp unistall utility and downloaded the full software from the hp website and re-installed the software. twice. It still does not work. When I try to start the scan from the hp solutions center it now says " an unexpected internal error has occured. click ok, close the program and try one of the following: 1) restart the program 2) restart the pc 3) reinstall the photo & imaging software & try again - none of these has worked. I have opened the hp solutions center, gone to settings, scan settings, set "scan to- set up". Initially I did had no send to options displayed in the scan to field. When I clicked on the drop down arrow, it was empty ie i had no send to options to select. Now i get a message that the program does not have any destinations to which to send the scans and that I should re-install the imaging software - which I have done twice already. I have gone to windows scan & fax. I can use it to perform a scan but do not have as good options as i have if i can use the hp solutions center ex i cannot save the scan as a pdf file. I am seeking a solution which restores my scanning capabiity through the hp solutions center since it has better scanning functions.

Try the document I linked below. It might be able to lead you to the root cause of the problem.

Thank you for your response.
I tried them all but still have the same problem.
If I try to scan from the HP Solutions Center clicking on "Scan Document" I get the message: An unexpected interanl error has occurred. Click ok to close the program and then try one fo the following: 1) restart the program, 2) restart the pc and then try again 3) re-install teh photo & imaging software and try again.
If I open the HP Solutions center & go to settings, scan settings, scan to setup, I get the message: "The program could not find any availavle destinations to which you can send scans. Click ok to close the program. Please reinstall the phot & imaging software to restore the destination information." I unistall the hp software using the hp uninstaller program and then reinstall the software which I download from the HP website but get the same result.
If I open the HP Solutions center & go to settings, scan settings, scan document settings, on the screen which opens up: 1) the box for "where do you want to send the scanned images is blank and if I click on its drop down arrow, there are no choices, the box is blank.
One aspect of the problem seems to be I no longer have an ability to select where to send the scanned image and appear to need to re-acquire the choices but uninstalling and reinstalling the software does not seem to do this.
If I use Window Vista (Ultimate) fax and scan program, I can create a tiff file saved in the Window's fax and scan program using the officejet 6310 all-in-one but I prefer using the HP software since it allows me to save as a pdf file and seems to have more capability.

As a follow up to my posting:
I could use my scanner with the Windows Vista Ultimate fax and scan software but this did not have the functionality that my hp solutions center software had. I could not get the hp solutions center software to work, it seemed that I had lost the ability to set "scan to" options - perhaps a windows update had made this aspect of the hp solutions center software out of date and hp is no longer updating this software for Vista.
I looked for another software package that might run my scanner and found one called VueScan which seems to run my scanner (Officejet 6310 All-In-One just fine. It supports other scanners as well. What I've read is that other people whose software for their scanners no longer works because it no longer is supported by the original manufacturers have found that this software has enabled them to continue using their scanners.

I have the same problem with scanning in my 6310. Since 2009 I couldn't scan at all and I ended up using MS Paint. Just recently I had to completely restore my Vista OS because of other problems. I subsequently reinstalled the HP software from download and would you believe the scanning function actually worked twice before I started getting 1706 errors. The error message says something about finding another path to scan.msi. Now I can get the thing to scan if I cancel out the error messages apporx 5 times. I tried VueScan and I get the same 1706 error but I only have to cancel out the error message once. No one seems to have an explanation as to what's going on. I ran the HPscan diagnostic and end up getting the same 1706 error and no fix seems to work. Can anybody out there explain this to me?

Solution found :
For me, the problem started when I was trying to scan a document. Later I found that for every Restart of the laptop, it would hunt for scan.msi That was really irritating.
I inserted the installation CD in the srive and searched the CD for scan.msi. I found it at the location \setup\scan\scan.msi
I selected it for installation and viola....,! Problem disappeared.
HP needs to answer, as to why the scan.msi that was first installed suddenly vanished. This seems to be a major problem with many HP printers, as can be found from various problems raised on various website.
Many suggest that a virus check may help. That is a wishful thinking. Re-Installing scan.msi from installation CD is the only solution.
Cheers!

I found the file scan.msi only because I knew where to look for it per your instructoions. I tried the two methods HP outlines on their website with no luck.
Can you tell me how you managed to get it installed without reinstalling the whole package? Thanks fo much.
