Hi there, i have an hp officejet 4620, bought in December 2013 but not installed until my previous machine ran out of consumables in February 2014. The hp uses a phenomenal amount of ink! I am now on my 4th xl black cartridge and my 3rd set of colour inks since the end of March - around 5 weeks. A 500 sheet pack of paper which was partly used when I installed the printer is still around one quarter full, so I estimate that I have printed something like 200 sheets maximum during this time. I mostly print letters and the like, so am more likely to be closer to an average of 5% coverage than 20%. Assuming my 200 page number to be correct, this gives a 'cost per sheet' figure of 35.5 pence or 57 cents in USA terms.  This is getting on for 10 times the figure hp suggests is the likely cost per page at 5% coverage.

Can anybody help before i buy another printer? Thanks in advance. Steve

Hi Countrygent

I have attached a link for your reference as some ink is used for servicing and keeping the printhead healthy.  More information on inkjets and usage.

If you are prining text only maybe select fast draft and if you want contact HP phone support.  Sometimes the documents we print use more ink depending on the mode you select.

Thanks

Hi Caroline,

Thanks for your reply. I changed the cartridges on May 9th and, the ink levels are holding up only a little better than the previous cartridges, despite switching to draft quality for most print jobs. I have just run the cleaning cycle today and this has reduced the ink levels by around 50% - surely this can't be right?

The performance of the 4620 versus my old Lexmark is dire. I will call the helpline but my experience so far with this printer does not fill me with any confidence.

Update on this issue: I have spoken with the hp support helpline this morning and hp has agreed to replace the printer free of charge. The guy I talked with was very helpful.

It appears that either the printhead is faulty or something is causing the ink to leak.

Hopefully this will be the end of the problem.
