Officejet Pro 8600 plus, on Windows PC 7, prints documents from my document list such as envelope address and other documents without command.  Printed 75 pages over night even with printer off.

Have uninstalled and reinstalled printer,  Ran status report which is normal.  What the heck is going on?

Thanks mariah3,

Let's check for a firmware update. Please click on the following link to download and install the firmware updater; HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g_n Firmware.

The easiest way to check if ePrint is enabled on the OJ 8600 is to  press the ePrint icon on the front panel. If web services is enabled it will display the printer's email address, etc.  If it is not enabled then it will prompt you to accept the terms of service.

Maybe also check the power source, maybe there is a power glitch. Do you have the printer connected directly to a wall outlet or into a surge protector/power bar? It should be straight into a wall outlet to ensure it is getting enough power without any power spikes.

Other than these suggestions, I am puzzled, I have never in my time with HP heard of a printer printing while it is off. I say if these solutions do not resolve the issue to call HP.  The number to call HP is 1-800-474-6836 for Canada and US, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.

Fingers crossed!

Hi mariah3,

I would like to help you with this mystery! Let's first start with a brief Q&A.

  • Are there any other computers on the network?
  • Is the printer on the network or connected via USB?
  • Do you have Web Severices enabled?
  • Do you use the printers ePrint feature?

While I wait to hear back from you, please download and install theHP Print and Scan Doctor. The HP Print and Scan Doctor is a free utility (tool) that helps to quickly resolve common printing, scanning and connectivity issues. HP recommends that you run the tool whenever you need to troubleshoot an issue.

The Print and Scan Doctor diagnoses and helps resolve common printing, scanning, and connectivity problems, including:

  • Connectivity :
USB: Verifies that the USB connection from your computer to the HP product is working correctly.
Network: Verifies that the network connection between your computer and your network is working correctly.
  • Device Status Test : Checks for device errors such as out of paper, paper jams, carriage stalls, and paper feed issues, and then provides instructions for fixing the error.
  • Driver Check : Checks for missing or corrupt driver files.
  • Device Manager : Checks for problems in Device Manager that would prevent printing.
  • Device Online : Checks if the product has been paused or set to offline, and then sets the status back to online if necessary.
  • Print Queue : Checks for and clears pending print jobs in the print queue (a log of print jobs waiting to print).
  • Port Match : Checks the port settings for the HP product.
  • Device Conflicts : Checks for conflicts with other drivers, such as other printer brands.
  • Ink Issues : Checks the cartridges and ink levels for issues that affect print quality.
  • Print Settings : Checks and adjusts the print quality settings.
  • Test Print : Prints a test page for print quality evaluation, and provides options for cleaning and aligning the printhead if necessary.
  • Scan Tests : Checks the scan mechanism, drivers, and registry entries.
You can also click the Printer menu to find the additional features such as cleaning printheads, aligning printheads, checking ink levels, and viewing advanced printer data for your selected printer.

Click here to download and run the utility > HP Print and Scan Doctor.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Neat name!  There is a laptop which shows that it recognizes the printer, but, it will not print from it. Shows that it is connected via network.

The PC computer is connected via network with the printer.

There is no wired usb connection.

Not sure if I have web services connected.

Not sure if I have eprint connected.

I have downloaded the driver doctor. and the driver install download.

Thanks for your help.

Sunshyn 2005,

I tried to enable eprint according to your instructions, but, evidently did not do something correctly. Also, I read the instructions for updating the firmware, but, the physical location of my printer/computer is such that it is very difficult for me to change to a usb wired connection.  I'm 82 and in fairly good shape, and extremely handsome, but, it is very difficu;t to get on my knees and get up!!  The printer has behaved and not printed without permission since we started the fix.  So as long as it will print when I tell it to, I guess I will just live with it for a while.  May call on you later if things get worse, so,don't stray too far.

Thank you for your help and patience.  It is not just the money, you are blessed with a virtue!

Best wishes,

Mariah3
