Officejet Pro 8620
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

I have had a problem using the "scan to usb" function on the Officejet Pro 8620.

I insert the usb into the slot for scanning the drive and led on the printer flashes as if it is reading it.

I will wait for a while... the flashing will stop,  but it never recognizes the usb drive.

Is there something special i need to do... or a certain type of thumb drive i need to use to make this function usable??

What am I missing?

Hi @mmi-inc,

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!

I see that you're unable to scan to a USB flash drive on your HP Officejet Pro 8620 Printer. I would be happy to help you and please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution', if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. If you wish to say 'thanks' for my effort to help, click the 'thumbs up' to give me a Kudos.

I understand how frustrating it is trying to get a flash drive working. I see that the USB drive flashes as if being read, but nothing happens. It sounds like something is wrong with the printer's firmware or there is an issue with the USB drive.

I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.

  • Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
  • Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector. This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
  • Make sure the printer is connected directly to a wall outlet. (don't use a power hub or a surge protector) This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
  • Updating the printer's firmware. Click here for the download.
  • Try the USB drive again.

I would try a Partial or Semi-Full Reset. I can send you that information in a private message. In the forum beside your handle name just click on the envelope to view it.

If the issue persists, please try a different flash drive or format the current flash drive. To see if that helps.

What size is the USB flash drive? Please ensure you're not exceeding the maximum size.

  • The printer does not support encrypted USB flash drives.
