My printer (8600 officejet Pro) has a red X on the display near the cartridges, but I've checked everything on the utility feature and nothing is out of place. Why would I be getting the red "X"? I think a manual with a display of that "screen" would help, but not sure if there is one.

Hello,

If the Red X is on any of the cartridge icons, which would indicate an faulty cartridge or the respective cartridge is not correctly inserted.

- you may try the below steps to resolve it if the cartrdiges are New and has ink in them.

    - take out  all the cartridges.

    - Power off the printer.

    - wait for 60 full seconds and then power on the printer.

   - Now instdall one cartridge at a time, and ensure that it is snapped well in the cartridge slot.

If the Red X is on the Right hand side of the Display, it is a Cancel button. ( nothing to worry about ).

I had already used the Utility feature to check about faulty cartridges or incorrectly inserted ones and it was confirming they were ok and reporting no errors; the same was true of the print head.

I don't know what you mean by the RH side of the display; not specifically anyway. I would need a diagram to know where you mean. The red X on mine displays on the black space next to the 2" square display monitor. Is that where you mean?

I ran a print head cleaning just for hoots and the red X went away.

Thought you might like to know that.

I have the 'red x' on the side of my Photosmart g-h alll-in-one. It will self diagnose and print out a diagnose sheet when I try to print a Word document or print photo the red x comes on and it just stops there... Is this problem the same as the one you already documented?

May i know the printer model# / description to assit you better ?

Meanwhile you may try the below steps if possible on the printer...

On the printer control panel,
1> touch Settings, then
2> touch Tools, then
3> touch Clean Printhead   or Clean Cartridge
