And if I elected not to install the OCR component then presumably all the issues with morbidly obese pdf files would be solved?  This seems too easy a solution...

Not really, but if you install version 12 for the printer software, then as you can see from posts of so many who've tried it, it helps slim down these morbidly obese PDF files to the athletes you see in the Olympics. It's not a "simple" solution, but not all solutions are simple. As long as they get the job done, you have to do em.

In my experience, if you try to install the HP Solutions Center WITHOUT OCR component using the CD that shipped with the C7280 product, then it will NOT afford the option of outputting to PDF. However, installing the HP Solutions Center v. 12 from the product specified on the previous page (not C7280) is relatively painless and does allow you to produce PDFs without the OCR overhead, making them about 1/6 the size. It's that simple and it worked for me and others here (see previous posts on this thread for more details how to do it).

well - I just completed the version 12 install and scanned a doc that I had done previously with version 10.  Old size was 254KB and new size is 9.5KB.  That's more like it.

It seems that I have to select the dpi setting for each scan that I make (read: each file that I save) which is a bit more cumbersome than I'd like but it beats creating files that I can't email.  Great workaround to a frustrating problem!

Scratch that...looks like you can save the modified scan settings.  It just keeps getting better!

Yup, save the settings. You can also save settings to scanner buttons, so you can walk up to it and press a button to start a scan at specified settings. What settings did you use to get size down to 9.5KB - that's tiny!

I wanted to see what 100dpi looked like - not enough resolution for filing purposes but perhaps good enough for rough cuts of docs.  It was a simple drawing too so there was a lot of unrendered "white space".

I appreciated so much finding out that I was not the only one having the problem of the document to PDF scan being way tooooooooo large.  It's about 8 times larger than the C6180 that I had last for a 10 page black and white doc.  For one thing it is not scanning in black and white even though the settings have been changed to black and white.  I can see Blue ink as it scans in.  That certainly doesn't help with the size of the file.  That makes it entirely impossible to email the PDF that is scanned from this machine.  I spent 8 hours approximately talking on the live chat to Boise, then Indonesia, then to India.  Now that I have read, probably the tip of the iceberg of complaints, it is amazing to me that the people that are supposed to be helping me fix a problem don't even know that it is not fixable.  I have a HP 4600 Lazerjet that I have had for about 10 years and a HP3500 that I have had for many years. I can honestly say that other than a complaint that the cartridges cost $200 or so, they have been very reliable.  It is such a shame that the HP printer has gone down in quality so much.  If anyone figures out a fix for the problem of file size, please let me know.  Thanks!

The solution has been posted in this thread regarding the issue, and it is to install the version 12 software. Please go through the previous pages and you will find the instructions there.

Hello!!! It's been a long time i havent check this post.

I am so glad that the solution i posted resolved this "pdf size" issue. Actually that solution was provided by Winston, an HP agent who took care of my issue. Ive been calling for this problem many times and search the web. He was the only one resolved my issue. thanks!
