I have been completely frustrated by this also.  But I finally found my solution today!  If you work on a Mac, just scan the file to computer as pdf, then open the file and "save as" name it and under file type is box that says Quartz Filter, in that drop down menu click "reduce file size" and there you go. I went from a 3mb file for 3 pages to 170KB.  Hope this helps....

for mac quartz filter is the way to go for sure. sorry to the pc people.

I just wonder why HP does not have a fix by now.

I fixed the problem.  I purchased a Brother J825DW.  It makes that HP look like an etch-a-sketch.  Works on Mac and PC and NEVER is down, NEVER needs to be rebooted or unplugged and comes with decent software that doesn't require a new partition on my hard drive.

Adios HP -good luck with your latest business model.

Ha!  Good to know.  Maybe I'll go that route next time - but considering I just bought this thing  I'll just be happy that I realized that my Mac has the quartz filter!

JnAustin, I did the same, bought Brother and will probably keep buying them.

I just hope my HP home printer/scanner doesn't break, although it hardly gets used.

I bought a Cannon MX860 it did have the same problem initially but I just had to tweak the software...easy as pie..good bye HP

Have HP sorted this yet? is there a download for ther inabillity to create something right from the gun?

Sorry HP but you royally messed this up for us all wanting a scanner, instead we got magnifying machines.

127 posts to this thread railing on HP and this specific problem, and I doubt if there's even one authorized post among them by HP attempting to assist. That says something, doesn't it?

I stand corrected. I just looked at the first couple pages of messages and Dexter from HP responded several times but with little help or understanding offered. Don't bother calling. Even if they do support this model anymore, you'll just get the runaround.

I did not disclose my HP info on purpose. i dont consider this as a problem, but just a hardware limitation. you could try scanning it in the jpeg format. that may help. that should reduce the size further as the JPEG format is compressed by default.

I can't imagine this not being seen as a problem!  It's a problem if you want to be able to scan and email a document.  It should be disclosed that in the hardware specs that items cannot be scanned into a compressed pdf file.  But again, I'm a Mac user, so this is no longer an issue for me.

I was thoroughly vexed by this issue for a period of literally years, starting with a OfficeJet 7500 I owned.  I never understood why a single page, once scanned to pdf format, would have a file size of 900 kb.  It defeated the purpose!

For some reason I went ahead and stuck with HP when I upgraded to the 8600 and was very disappointed to encounter that the same issue persists!  HOWEVER, this time I found a solution.

I suppose there may be different software interfaces for scanning, but in the one that came with my OfficeJet 8600 Pro, when you get ready to scan and are selecting the "Save as PDF" format, the resolution, the color, etc, there is also a link at the bottom of the dialogue box that reads "Advanced Settings".  Once you click on this, there is a section entitled "File Size / Quality" complete with a horizontal slider bar that allows you to move it left or right to choose between "smallest size" and "highest quality".  I moved the bar most of the way towards the "smallest size" and voila, file size of 100 kb per page.

I hope that helps someone out there!
