It is a simple enough fix for HP to make to the printer, but it appears that we must vote with our wallets.

I too have an OfficeJet Pro 8620 and am unable to get Network Scan feature to work on 10.10.

I've also got a test device running 10.11 which has the same issues (SMB v3).

I have the same scan problem with a new set of circumstances that I haven't seen mentioned after having found and read this horribly long thread:

First, I have an Officejet Pro X576dw that suffered the same lack of ability to scan to network folder. Then a firmware update did come out and it started working again.

However, some time after that the problem re-occurred but as an intermittent. After some attempted troubleshooting I discovered that If I rebooted my Mac the problem would go away for an undetermined amount of time (usually minutes to hours) and I could scan again. When I tried later on the error would occur and after a reboot I could scan for awhile. Unless someone has any thoughts, I think I'll try setting up a USB share on my router.

If your computer gets its URL from your router' DHCP server and the URL is periodically refreshed (changed) things stop working until the correct URL is set for the printer. The software requires a numeric URL for the Shared folder and does not follow the computer's name.

@jdownward: What you say is true, but my Mac has a fixed IP address via the router and the computers mac address. That isn't the problem.

If you have another computer, check to see if the shared folder is seen on your network. If printer periodically checks for the shared folder's presence and it ever vanishes, it might not recover properly and enter into an indeterminate state.

If the sharing daemon is screwing up, you might see if stoping and restarting sharing from the System Preferences clears the error without having to reboot.

Another good comment, but no joy. Can't scan to iMac, and Mac Pro on the network can still see the contents of the shared folder, which is Desktop, by the way. The error I'm getting on the printer LED is "User name or password is incorrect. Make sure the credentials are correct in the configuration". If I reboot the iMac it will start working again with no other changes made by me.

That error message on my system used to mean the computer sharing was using a different SMB protocol stack. Are there any other devices in your network using SMB protocol for sharing that might be nudging your Mac to switch protocol stacks?

Does this happen if only the printer and your Mac are on your network?

Does your router support SMB sharing and could it be getting in the way?

Does this happen if you create and use a new username and nothing is set to run at login?

@jdownward, thanks for working with me on this.

There are quite 20+ items on my home network(!), several other Macs, iPhones, another router, and various other controllers. I'm pretty sure my main router has SMB as for a workaround I plugged in a USB stick and will use that to transfer scans until this gets resolved...

Haven't tried that yet... the main mac is used as a server and so it's hard to isolate it... may have to though... problem is that it doesn't happen immediately. Once I reboot it works for an indeterminate amount of time.

As mentioned before it does, but previously I had the same problem with an Apple Extreme... dunno if that supported SMB or not.

I tried setting up a new account, but couldn't get it to accept the folder. I used \\192.168.0.5\Desktop which works (intermittently) on my main ID, but it wouldn't work on the new acct. I did make sure that the Desktop folder was shared. Of course there are machine wide programs that run, even if I didn't set them up specifically on that account.

Thanks...

The best work around I have seen to this problem is "scan to computer" from the scanner,  which should provide a selection of computers that are listening on the network but apparently avoids the SMB conflict. It does not have the same control interface, but it will allow yo to scan at the scanner, and send the scan to the targeted computer.
