I have just purchased a HP Deskjet 2540 All-in-One Printer. Everything seems to be working ok printwise apart from my inability to print two-sided manually. In the  "Printing Preferences" it clearly says "Print two-sided" but this does not happen. My old 5550 model did this automatically so am dissapointed that this model is giving me problems I cannot solve. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My apologies, in double checking everything, I see that for your Deskjet 2540 the Print on Both Sides Manually option is on the Layout tab after you click Preferences from the Print Dialogue box not under the Advanced menu. Once in there you just have to choose whether you want it to flip on the long or short edge. With it being manual duplexing you will still have to flip the pages and re-insert them in the printer.

If that still isn't what you see, it's possible that the software didn't install correctly, or something along those lines, so we can definitely remove and reinstall the software to ensure everything goes smoothly. To remove the software, please follow this Uninstalling the Printer Software document and then if you're using Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 I will advise that you download and run the HP Printer Install Wizard to get the software installed. If you're working with Windows XP or Vista, head to this link and proceed to download the software from there.

Let me know how this works out for you!

Hi xwebfoot,

Welcome to the HP forums!

I'm sorry to hear you've had issues doing two sided printing on your Deskjet 2540, but I will certainly do my best to assist you 🙂

In your printer software you would want to click the Printing Preferences and then the Advanced button to get the screen below. In that section you want to make sure that the print on both sides is set to on, and then you will have to manually flip the pages as your Deskjet does not have an automatic duplex accessory.

Let me know how that goes for you 🙂

Hi Miss TeriLynn

Thankyou for replying to my problem.

I have followed your advice but "Printing preferences Layout"  shows  "Print on both sides manually" but does not have an "ON" option. In the "Advanced" screen "Printing on both sides manually" does not appear in the list!

Look forward to hearing from again,

I'm glad everything is working for you! I was just wondering if I could I get you to unmark your post as the Accepted Solution and mark my post as the solution, so that way others can find the solution faster? If you don't mind changing it, please follow the steps below:

1. Go to the post you marked as the Accepted Solution.
2. To the right of the subject line you will see Options, click on Options.
3. Now scroll down to Not the Solution and click on Not the Solution.
4. Now you should be able to scroll to my post that resolved the issue and mark it as the Accepted Solution for our thread.

However, if you don't want to change it there are no hard feelings and I hope you have a great rest of the week 🙂

Hi, I've read this through.  I've got a similar problem - two-sided printing option is 'greyed out' on the print dialogue - but this is on Mac OSX Yosemite, not Windows, so the solution above doesn't work.  Any help gratefully received.

Hi @RhinoJim and welcome to the HP Forums!

Are you working with a Deskjet 2540 as well? That will help me figure out what settings you should be able to see.

Let me know 🙂
