I have the same question -- how do I get to the glass strip? I don't see one. I only see a concave strip of plastic, which, by the way, has an etched-in scratch on it exactly where my vertical line is (right of center)!

To access the feeder scanning strip, lift up the document feeder as if you are going to place something on the full glass. To the left is the cover of the feeder. You need to lift this up and to the left where it is hinged to the printer. With both hands place your fingers just under the cover and pull up - the cover is going to tilt to the left as you are facing the printer. You will see the feeder with rollers, again with two hands, gently lift up on the top part of the feeder. You will see the glass strip below. Make sure you have good light to clean it and blow away all debris before closing in reverse order. Hope this helps. HP really ought to make a video of how to do this stuff. Good Luck

Sorry, I'm still confused. YOu said to life up the whole lid as if I'm going to palce a document face down on the bed. OK, I'm with you, But then you said to lift up the cover of the feeder? I'm confused. Are you talking about the underside of the lid?

I have the same problem with a vertical line appearing whenever I use the ADF for copying or scanning. I'm on the HP 8500A Plus. I have tried to follow the directions very kindly given to clean the mirrored plate but I too am unable to get the roller thing to hinge up and to the left.

I solved my problem. It was not the glass, it was not the mirrored section either. On my LaserJet M1212 printer/scanner there is a white plastic strip that is on the opposite side of the page being scanned when fed through the feeder. It needs to cleaned of the ink that builds up from all the pages scanned.
I tested this by temporarily putting a black decal on the plastic piece and I got a thick black line on my scans that matched the width of the decal and the position of the decal.
I hope this helps.

Help ! I have attempted to follow all instructions but I can't find any way that the roller cover could come off. I have a 8600 premium and the first 2 times this happened I udated drivers, turned it off, etc... and the line went away. But this week - it is back again. I have tried to clean everything I can but do not understand about removing the roller cover to the left (when you have the adf open as if you are gong to make a copy). Any more ideas? There is the white plastic strip but it seems to be attached via a spring and two white plastic "feet". Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks
Sheri

For Sheri -
If you can see the white plastic strip attached by springs, you have everything open that you need. Below this is the glass for the feeder which is on the same plane as the flatbed, so just clean the glass under that and then put the feeder and cover back down. Hope this helps!

I have a 8600. Face the printer/scanner. Lift up the scanning bad lid. On the right you see the page-sized glass covering the scanning mechanism. Look to the left and you will see a thin glass strip. That is the strip they are advising to clean.
Look to the left on the underside of the lid. You will see a white strip (metal?plastic?). That is where I found some dust as well. I cleaned that also.
After cleaning the page-sized glass, the thin glass strip, and the white strip my scans were clear again.

I just got back from a class, and scanned in some worksheets through the feeder and they came out with a line about an inch down the left margin as well. the margin doesnt appear on docs scanned on flatbed.
It isnt dirt. it only does it on the papers I just brought back from class. when I scan other docs through the feeder they come out without the line.
any more ideas?
