There are two spots to look at for most scanners, 1 the long thin glass area on some scanners (make sure that is clean) and 2 most have a long white piece of plastic (this needs to be cleaned too). This usually solves the problem, you may need some mild solvent to clean the long white piece of plastic. If the long plastic piece has damage/scratches, then there may be a replacement piece or you might get away using an equivalent sized piece of white tape, preferably plastic tape, to cover the damage. Do a test scan of a blank white piece of paper to look for all the black line locations to be certain you have corrected the problem and to be sure the repair is not interfering with scanning process.
Since magazines and other pieces of paper may be leaving ink build up on the long white strip, dry erase solution and/or permanent marker remover may help as well.
I have used these on scanners in the past with varying results, had to try and try again until I found the exact solution.

Thanks for the suggestion. Turns out it was nothing I ever would have guessed...a power surge created the lines. I kept going through HP's help doctor and found that possibility. Turns out I needed to unplug the machine from the power cord (while on) and then unplug the cord frrom the wall. Wait 30 seconds, plug back in, warm up and, Voila! the lines were gone.

I have same problem before. I try many solutions, but I found the solution is very easy, I found little small dust only, I was clean the small and big glass, after that everything be fine.

This is the correct answer - I have an 8620 and in my case the vertical line was present from day one when scanning from the document feeder. The white strip had a tiny round black sticky residue mark left over from the over zealous packaging. Very difficult to remove but now that it is gone so is the vertical line! :womanlol:

I got rid of my last 8600 because of the vertical line that I couldn't seem to get rid of no matter how often I cleaned both glass surfaces. Now I have an Officejet Pro 8620 and after a month, I am having the very same problem.
Hint to self: When people say clean the glass, then REALLY clean the glass. The first issue that I found was that there was a small staple stuck under the lid. Removed that.... still not working. Then I got an alcohol swab and cleaned both glass surfaces very well, or so I thought.... Still seeing a vertical line. Then I actually ran my finger across the glass and felt a very, very tiny bump! Aha!!! I scratched off that speck with my fingernail, and Voila!! Problem solved. Sometimes the tiniest hard spec on the surface is very easy to overlook. My problem was almost invisible to the naked eye, but it was definately there, so look closely in the area of the line placement, and maybe that will solve your problem too.

clean the small glass strip to the left of your machine, under the hood, beside the glass where you would lay your copy. Clean carefully and totally. Mine had a very tiny pin point hard spec that I had to scratch off with my fingernail. When I did, it solved my problem. PS. Alcohol didn't remove the spec when I thought I was cleaning it...
Because your issue is on scanned, and not copied documents, then there is surely some funky stuff on your glass.

I'm scanning a large document and every page had a vertical red line.
Cleaning the 1" wide glass surface on the left and using canned air initially did not work. I have never used any type of cleaning products on scanner platens and only use a microfiber cloth to keep them dust free. Taking a flashlight and looking closer on the glass surface close to where the line was appearing revealed there was a small red speck of ink.
I removed the red dot of ink and it's working just fine!
