I've just brought a HP Deskjet 1050A and can't set it to print draft mode as all the print quality options are greyed out, with normal selected.  I've seen other posts on this via google and although the issue has been well defined there was no answer as to how to select the draft option.

HP must know why the option is greyed out, is it:-

A limitation of the printer?

Software bug?

The option is there but can't be selected.  Advanced doesn't allow it either.

I'm running Windows 7

  • Well, that`s a million dollar question, why the limitation on the printer ?
  • IMHO, i think is a software bug, because in a printer model just above that, the option is available to change.
  • For example, the Officejet 6500 has the option.

1. So, the workaround I apply to that is install the Deskjet 1050A.

2. Then I install the Officejet 6500 even i do not have that model, just to install the driver.

3. Then in the Properties of the printer, select the Advanced Options and in the controller drop-down select the Officejet 6500 driver, then Apply and OK.

After that change of the driver i am able to change the Print Quality options, to Best, Normal or Draft.

A few screenshots of the workaround....

However, I dont know why HP doesnt make any changes to the driver.

Hope these workaround steps helps you.

Hi all.

This is not a limitation of the driver, the quality settings of some deskjet models are a bit different than other models.

Please follow the steps below to change the printer quality setting:

  1. Enter the Printing Preferences of the printer, that can be done through the application used to print for the current print job or via Devices and Printers to change the default print settings.
  2. Enter the Paper/Quality tab.
  3. Click the Media drop-down menu, it will provide a combined seletion of the required paper type and print quality:
