I have tried to connect my Samsung Galaxy S5 to my new Officejet 7612 via wifi direct but have had no success. Everything I've read seems to verify that this protocol is available for this printer for wireless printing. Even HP support seems stymied. Any suggestions?
Yes my wifi is on and connected to network, wireless direct is on (different protocol than wifi direct) and everything else seems to be in working order. I prefer wifi direct for quick print without emailing to my printers email address.

"Direct-25-OfficeJet 4650" is an HP Printer that has Wifi Direct active, and is nearby. It is offering to "Connect" to it.
If they disabled security on the option (BAD idea), you could most likely print a document containing "BOO!" and listen for a scream! 😉
I'm using a different series of printer at home - the 86xx series, which only has "Wireless Direct". I know from experience that connecting it wirelessly to my network is seamless and easy to work with with any Android device. It does not experience the "glitches" the link you quoted warns about - devices wanting to re-connect to the printer instead of the normal wifi network, and some non-Samsung devices unable to use the "Print" command.
Neither the User Guide, nor the Specifications for your printer indicate the 7612 supports "Wifi Direct". Wireless Direct, yes. I think that probably puts the nail in the coffin. 😞
(BTW, thanks for forcing me to do more research on the differences between the two protocals! Learned something today.) 🙂
The ePrint app will print directly to the printer if both the sending device and printer are connected to the same network. You don't need to use the ePrint service/email attachment routine at all!

Hi,
The simplest way to print wirelessly from your mobile device is to download the HP eprint app and ensure that both your printer and device are connected to the same wifi network - once this is complete, you'll be bale to print wirelessly from within the eprint app.
Alternatively (and if your printer supports wireless direct), you can use the wireless direct funtion of your printer by turining on the wireless button on the front of the printer. This allows the printer generate it's own wifi singal that you can connect to through any wireless device. To find the wireless password, simply hold down the wireless direct button for more than 3 secs and it will print the password on plain paper (make sure paper is loaded).
You'll find your printer specs here.

I appreciate the reply. I'm aware of eprint solutuons, wireless direct protocol and email to printer email address possibilties. Again, I'm really trying to do a 'wifi direct' solution. This is a quick connect answer and offers the ability to print wirelessly, quickly and I'm assuming with options to change paper size, printout mode etc. As I posted, I was led to believe that this generation of the 7610 series was able to connect wirelessly through the 'wifi direct' protocol being used by many other devices. I'm looking for a quick print option, not going thru multiple steps of connecting my android to the hp wireless network, (and losing internet connectivity in theprocess), starting up the wireless direct dialogue etc. If I'm mistaken about wifi direct http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04577030 then I'll drop my search for a solution, but if not then... is it possible and how do I go about it?

Did you read your User Manual from the HP web site?
Download it here and read starting on page 242.

Any specific reason why you so desire "wireless direct" vs. a normal Wireless connection to your home system?
Wireless (or wifi direct) seems to me to be a "last resort" option when no wifi network is available... The benefits (again, to me) of connecting your printer to your router outweigh wireless direct.
I can print wirelessly directly (no ePrint needed) from any device in my home using a wireless printer connected to my wireless network. Windows PC, Android Tablet, Chromebook, Samsung S6, etc.!

I have used PrinterShare premium for a couple of years now and it doesn't always provide satisfactory results. HP print services aren't always available to print thru and sometimes it doesn't come out right either, even after tweaking the settings for pix size, fill versus fit, etc. I've messed with mobile printing for years, starting with PalmOS and I realize it's still in development. I suppose I'm compulsive about this, but I use my phablet and tablet alot and sometimes print snippets from webpages for reference to whatever I'm working on at the moment. It would be nice to shoot it to the printer and get on with whatever I'm doing.

I did download and read it per your suggestion. There is no info on Wi-Fi direct printing in the documentation. As I mentioned previously, there's a subtle difference between wireless direct and Wi-Fi direct protocol. From what I'm gathering, there is no Wi-Fi direct capability in the 7610 series of printers, even though the article I previously mentioned said all printers after 2014 are "Wi-Fi direct" capable. Bummer!
Yep, page 242 info is still there for Direct printing.

That involves disconnecting from my home network, connecting to the HP printer address network, then going thru the rest of the print process. I get that's possible but... too many steps and possible disconnection from the internet while using the HP network connection. Wi-Fi direct, boom...done. Not a word about that in manual.
