- AirPrint not working on iOS with Samsung M283X printers
This is about AirPrint not working on IOS after IOS 17!
The printers are about a decade old at this stage, and expecting firmware updates thus far is something that Printer Manufacturers don't usually do! But this is a technical deep dive for those who are curious as to "WHY" this does not work.
New IOS versions don't like invalid txt-records that the printer publishes!
The printer, as you can see below, publishes an invalid "Fax=" record. This record is just not required, and it breaks the entire discovery process!

For those interested: Only after AirPrint is enabled in network settings, the printer supports `image/urf`! Also, it responds with valid PTR+SRV records, just that the TXT records have a broken token
The workaround is to just use OpenWRT / any other network device which you can put an "avahi" service on and let it reflect those same values! ChatGPT/LLMs are your friend, but it's very easy to create a minimal service file based on that DNS-SD dump. Essentially, Avahi advertises the printer, and then iOS connects to that printer.
The printer also has issues with WMM, so I had to create a new SSID just for that printer and set WMM to off and legacy transfer rates. This fixed the dropped frames issues
The WiFi card's Sleep QoS from this printer is broken. It will become unresponsive for no reason... and AirPrint is not happy when those things happen! Just let it use old-school ps-polling on the network.
