- Fixing Printer Offline / Unavailable Issues – HP DeskJet 290...
If your HP DeskJet 2900 series shows Printer Offline, Unavailable, or fails to be detected over Wi‑Fi, it is usually due to connectivity, network, or software status problems rather than a hardware failure.
Troubleshooting Steps
1. Check basic setup and environment
-
Distance to router
Make sure the printer is within 8 meters (26 ft) of your Wi‑Fi router or range extender. Long distances or walls can cause intermittent connection and “offline” errors.
Weak Wi‑Fi signal prevents stable communication between the printer and the computer/mobile device. -
Power connection
- Plug the printer power cable directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or surge protector.
Direct power reduces power fluctuation issues that can cause the printer to enter an error or offline state.
- Plug the printer power cable directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or surge protector.
-
USB connection (if using USB)
- If connected via USB, connect the cable directly to the computer, not through a hub or docking station.
- Ensure the USB cable is less than 3 m (9 ft 10 in).
Long or indirect USB connections can cause unstable communication and offline status.
-
Update software and firmware
- Confirm your computer or mobile device has the latest OS updates.
- Make sure the printer firmware is up to date via the HP app or HP support site.
Old firmware or drivers can cause connectivity bugs and offline messages.
2. Restart printer and computer
-
Restart computer/mobile device
Close all applications and reboot. -
Power cycle the printer
- Turn the printer off.
- Unplug the power cord from the printer and from the wall.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug the cord back into the wall outlet, then into the printer.
- Turn the printer on with the power button.
This clears temporary error states and network/USB glitches that can cause the printer to show offline.
3. Reset printer network settings (Wi‑Fi)
If you use wireless printing:
- Disconnect USB (if previously used) before doing wireless setup.
- Enter Wi‑Fi Setup Mode on the DeskJet 2900:
- Press the Cancel button to wake the printer.
- Press and hold Wireless + Cancel together for 5 seconds until the Power button starts blinking.
- Wait until the blue Wireless light blinks continuously.
The printer is now in Wi‑Fi Setup Mode and discoverable for 2 hours.
Resetting the network settings clears old or corrupted Wi‑Fi configuration and lets the printer rejoin your network cleanly.
4. Remove and re‑add the printer in the HP app
Use the HP app (Windows, macOS, or mobile):
- Open HP app and select your printer on the home screen.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Remove from app.
- Confirm with Remove device from app.
- Tap the “+” (plus) icon and choose Set up a new printer.
- Let the HP app search for printers.
- Select your DeskJet 2900 when it appears, then choose Continue.
- Follow on‑screen prompts to connect the printer to your wireless network (SSID and password).
- When setup completes, you return to the HP app home screen; try printing again.
Removing and re‑adding the printer clears stale configuration and reconnects it to the HP app and OS with fresh settings, resolving many “offline/unavailable” states.
5. Run “Diagnose & Fix” in the HP app (PC/Laptop)
On Windows or macOS:
- Open HP app and select your printer.
- Scroll to Diagnostics and click Diagnose & Fix.
- Click Start and wait for analysis to complete (do not close the app).
- Follow the on‑screen instructions to fix any issues found.
Diagnose & Fix automatically checks common causes of offline errors: port settings, driver problems, firewall blocks, and service states, then repairs them where possible.
6. Check Windows print queue and printer status (USB or Wi‑Fi)
If you still see Printer Offline in Windows:
-
Verify printer is not paused or offline
- Open Devices and Printers / Printers & Scanners (Control Panel, depending on Windows version).
- Right‑click your HP DeskJet, choose See what’s printing.
- In the Printer menu, make sure Pause Printing and Use Printer Offline are unchecked.
- Try printing again.
-
Verify default printer
- In Devices and Printers, confirm your HP DeskJet has the check mark indicating default.
- If not, right‑click it and select Set as Default Printer, then print again.
-
Restart the Print Spooler service
- Open Services (via Control Panel → System and Security → Administrative Tools → Services).
- Find Print Spooler, open Properties.
- Ensure Startup type = Automatic.
- If not running, click Start, then OK.
-
Clear the print queue
- In the printer’s queue window, click Cancel all documents (or Purge Print Document).
- Confirm with Yes, then try printing again.
- If jobs remain, restart the computer and check the queue again.
Stuck jobs, incorrect default settings, or a stopped spooler service can make the printer appear offline even when the connection is fine.
