- HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw – Printer Abruptly Stopped...
HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw suddenly stops printing documents or images in color and may print only in black and white, grayscale, or with missing/distorted colors.
- Printer previously printed in color but suddenly prints only in black and white.
- Color documents print without color.
- Some colors are missing or appear incorrect.
- Color printing works from one application but not another.
- The printer recognizes the color toner cartridges, but color output is incorrect.
- Color printing may work from another computer but not the primary computer.
1. Print a printer-generated report
Print a Configuration Report or other available printer information/report directly from the printer control panel.
Check whether the report contains color.
If the report prints correctly in color:
The printer hardware is likely functioning. Continue with the computer and driver troubleshooting below.
If the report also does not print in color:
Continue with the toner and printer-side troubleshooting.
2. Check the color toner cartridges
Check the printer for the Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow toner supplies.
Verify that:
- All color cartridges are installed.
- The printer recognizes the cartridges.
- No cartridge-related error is displayed.
- The cartridges are not reported as empty or unusable.
- There is no visible damage to the cartridges.
The M283fdw uses separate color toner supplies. If one or more color supplies are unavailable or not communicating correctly, color output can be missing or significantly distorted.
3. Reseat the color toner cartridges
If a color cartridge is not recognized:
- Open the toner access area.
- Remove the affected cartridge.
- Inspect it for visible damage or foreign material.
- Reinstall the cartridge securely.
- Close the printer.
- Allow the printer to initialize.
- Check the toner status again.
- Print another color test.
A cartridge that is not seated correctly may not communicate properly with the printer.
4. Check the printer for error messages
Check the printer control-panel display for messages related to:
- Toner
- Cartridge
- Supply status
- Printer error
- Calibration
- Print quality
- Door or hardware errors
Resolve any active printer error before continuing. An active printer or supply error can prevent normal color printing.
5. Check Windows print preferences
If the printer's internal report prints correctly in color:
- Open the document.
- Select File > Print.
- Select the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw.
- Open Printer Properties or Printing Preferences.
- Locate the color settings.
- Select Color.
- Disable Print in Grayscale, Black & White, or Monochrome, if enabled.
- Apply the changes.
- Print a test document.
The printer may be capable of color printing while the driver is configured to send the print job as grayscale.
6. Check the application's print settings
If the problem occurs only in a particular application:
- Open the application's Print dialog.
- Check for Color, Grayscale, or Black & White options.
- Select Color.
- Print the document again.
Test printing from another application, such as Windows Paint or Photos. Some applications can apply their own color settings independently of the printer's default preferences.
7. Print a color test document
Create or open a document containing:
- Red
- Green
- Blue
- Yellow
- Cyan
- Magenta
- Black
Print the document.
Use the result to identify the problem:
- All colors print correctly: Original document/application may be responsible.
- Everything prints black: Check grayscale settings and the driver.
- One color is missing: Check the corresponding color toner supply and print-quality system.
- Colors are present but incorrect: Check toner, calibration, print-quality settings, and driver configuration.
8. Test from another computer
Connect another computer to the M283fdw and print a color document.
If color works from another computer:
The issue is likely related to the original computer's driver or print settings.
If color does not work from another computer:
The issue is more likely printer-side.
Testing another computer helps isolate the operating system, driver, and application from the printer.
9. Power-cycle the printer
- Cancel pending print jobs.
- Turn off the printer.
- Disconnect the power cable.
- Wait approximately 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cable.
- Turn the printer on.
- Wait until initialization is complete.
- Print another color test.
A power cycle can clear temporary printer-state or processing problems.
10. Run HP printer diagnostics
Use the available HP diagnostic tools, such as HP App diagnostics.
Run the printing diagnostics and allow the tool to check for:
- Printer connection problems
- Driver problems
- Print queue problems
- Printer configuration issues
HP diagnostic tools can identify common software and communication problems that may prevent the computer from sending color print jobs correctly.
11. Reinstall the printer driver
If the printer's internal reports print correctly but computer documents remain black and white:
- Remove the M283fdw from Windows Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Restart the computer.
- Install the appropriate HP printer software/driver.
- Add the M283fdw again.
- Open the printer's preferences.
- Confirm that Color is selected.
- Print a color test.
A corrupted or incorrectly configured printer driver can cause color options to disappear or cause print jobs to be sent in grayscale.
12. Check for recent operating-system or driver changes
Determine whether the issue started after:
- A Windows update
- A macOS update
- A printer driver update
- HP software changes
- Printer firmware changes
- Removing and reinstalling the printer
If the problem began immediately after one of these changes, reinstalling or correcting the printer driver/settings may resolve the issue.
13. Perform print-quality troubleshooting
If the printer's own reports have missing or incorrect colors:
- Check color toner status.
- Check for cartridge errors.
- Print a print-quality or diagnostic page, if available.
- Run the printer's available calibration/print-quality procedure.
- Print another test page.
Check for:
- Missing color blocks
- Faded colors
- Streaks
- Incorrect colors
- Repeating defects
- A completely missing color
The printer can recognize the toner cartridges while still experiencing a print-quality or imaging-system problem.
14. Test using a different connection
If the printer is connected through Wi-Fi, test using another supported connection, such as USB, if available.
If color works through USB:
Investigate the network printer configuration or network-specific driver.
If color still does not work:
The problem is unlikely to be caused by the network connection.
