- HP DeskJet 2800e All-in-One Printer – Stuck on “Validating”
The HP DeskJet 2800e All-in-One Printer remains stuck on “Validating” and does not complete printer initialization or become ready for printing. The printer may remain on the validating screen for an extended period, preventing normal printer operation. The 2800e validating condition can occur when the printer is unable to complete an internal initialization or cartridge verification process.
Possible causes include:
- A temporary printer firmware or system communication glitch.
- One or both ink cartridges are not seated correctly.
- Cartridge contacts are dirty or the cartridge is not being detected correctly.
- Protective tape or packaging remains on a cartridge.
- An incompatible, damaged, or non-genuine cartridge is installed.
- The cartridge carriage cannot move correctly because of an obstruction.
- The printer has not completed its initial setup or cartridge initialization.
- Communication between the printer and the HP app is interrupted during setup or recovery.
- A temporary power or initialization problem.
Troubleshooting steps
1: Wait for the validation process to complete
If the printer has recently been powered on, cartridges have been installed, or the printer has just completed setup, allow the printer several minutes to finish its initialization.
Do not repeatedly turn the printer off and on while it is actively performing an operation.
If the printer remains stuck on “Validating” and does not progress, continue with the next step.
2: Perform a printer power reset
A power reset can clear a temporary initialization or communication problem.
- Leave the printer turned on.
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet.
- Turn on the printer if it does not power on automatically.
- Wait for the printer to finish its startup process.
- Check whether the “Validating” message has cleared.
Avoid using a surge protector or power strip during this test. Connecting directly to a wall outlet helps determine whether the problem is related to the power connection.
3: Check and reseat the ink cartridges
If the printer remains stuck on “Validating,” check the cartridges.
- Turn on the printer.
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Wait until the cartridge carriage stops moving.
- Remove the installed cartridges.
- Check each cartridge for:
- Correct cartridge type for the printer.
- Remaining protective tape or packaging.
- Visible damage.
- Damaged or contaminated electrical contacts.
- If protective tape is present, remove it carefully.
- Reinstall each cartridge into its correct slot.
- Push the cartridge firmly into position until it clicks into place.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Allow the printer to perform its initialization.
HP's DeskJet 2800 series cartridge instructions specifically recommend correctly installing replacement cartridges and using cartridges compatible with the printer.
4: Check the cartridge carriage for an obstruction
A carriage obstruction can prevent the printer from completing initialization.
- Turn the printer off.
- Disconnect the power cord.
- Open the cartridge access area.
- Look inside the printer for:
- Torn paper.
- Packing material.
- Foreign objects.
- Labels or pieces of cartridge packaging.
- Make sure the cartridge carriage is not visibly blocked.
- If the carriage can be moved safely, gently check that it can move freely.
- Do not force the carriage if it is stuck.
- Remove any easily accessible obstruction.
- Close the cartridge access door.
- Reconnect the printer and turn it on.
If the carriage is physically jammed or cannot move normally, additional carriage-jam troubleshooting may be required. HP lists carriage jam/E3 troubleshooting for the DeskJet 2800 series.
5: Verify the cartridges are compatible
Make sure the cartridges installed in the printer are intended for the HP DeskJet 2800e series and for the correct region.
If the printer was recently set up for the first time, use the original HP setup cartridges supplied with the printer when applicable. Setup cartridges can be required to complete initial printer setup and initialization.
Do not assume that a cartridge with a similar number is compatible simply because it physically fits the printer.
HP provides a cartridge compatibility and replacement resource for the DeskJet 2800/e series.
6: Check whether the problem is caused by a cartridge
If the printer continues to display “Validating” after reseating both cartridges, the cartridge or cartridge contacts may be contributing to the problem.
If appropriate for the printer's current state:
- Turn the printer off.
- Disconnect the power cord.
- Remove the cartridges.
- Inspect the electrical contacts for contamination or damage.
- Reinstall the cartridges securely.
- Reconnect power.
- Turn the printer on.
- Check the display.
If the printer begins displaying a specific cartridge, ink, or error message after this process, follow the troubleshooting for that specific message.
Do not repeatedly remove and reinstall cartridges unnecessarily.
7: Complete or restart printer setup
If the printer is new or the “Validating” message appears during initial setup, the printer may not have completed the setup process.
Use the current HP app to complete printer setup.
- Install or open the HP app on the computer or mobile device.
- Make sure the printer is powered on.
- Follow the on-screen setup instructions.
- Allow the app to detect the printer.
- Complete any requested printer registration or setup steps.
- Wait for the printer to finish initialization.
- Test printing after setup is complete.
HP's current DeskJet 2800e setup page recommends the HP app for printer setup, driver installation, printing, scanning, and troubleshooting.
8: Check the printer connection
If the printer was previously working and became stuck during setup or after a network change, refresh the printer's Wi-Fi setup mode.
For the DeskJet 2800 series, HP Support Community guidance identifies the following Wi-Fi reset procedure:
- Make sure the printer is turned on.
- Press and hold Cancel and Wi-Fi together for approximately 5 seconds.
- Release the buttons when the Power light begins blinking.
- Use the HP app to add the printer again.
- Follow the on-screen Wi-Fi setup instructions.
This step is intended for a printer that has a network/setup communication problem; it does not directly repair a defective cartridge or mechanical problem.
9: Run HP printer diagnostics
If the printer becomes accessible to the HP app, use the available printer diagnostic tools.
HP's current DeskJet 2800e troubleshooting page provides Printer diagnostics and Fix ink cartridge issues options for this printer series.
- Open the HP app.
- Select the DeskJet 2800e printer.
- Open Diagnose & Fix or the available printer diagnostics.
- Run the recommended diagnostic checks.
- Apply any recommended fixes.
- Restart the printer if requested.
- Test printing.
10: Check for a specific error or blinking-light pattern
If “Validating” disappears but the printer displays an error, an E indicator, ink warning, blinking light, or another message, troubleshoot that specific condition instead.
The DeskJet 2800 series has separate HP troubleshooting procedures for:
- Blinking lights and error codes.
- E0 errors.
- Cartridge errors.
- Ink system failures.
- Carriage jams/E3.
- Paper jams/E4.
- Printer connection problems.
