If your HP LaserJet MFP 234 setup is incomplete, here are generic troubleshooting steps and the possible reasons based on the HP LaserJet MFP M232-M237 series support information.

Possible Reasons Setup Is Incomplete

  • Packing material or the orange toner sheet was not fully removed.
  • Paper was not loaded correctly.
  • The printer is not powered on correctly.
  • A USB cable was connected too early during setup.
  • The printer was not placed into Wireless Setup Mode.
  • The HP app or HP Easy Start setup was not completed.
  • The printer has an active error code such as:
    • Er/01: Input tray is empty
    • Er/02: Cartridge access door is open
    • Er/03: Printer failed to pick paper
    • Er/04 / Er/05 / Er/06: Paper jam
    • Er/07: Toner cartridge missing or not installed correctly
    • Er/08: Toner cartridge very low and set to stop
    • Er/30: Scanner issue
    • Er/79: Wireless-related printer error on connected wireless models

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Check all packaging materials

  • Remove all tape and packing materials.
  • Gently pull out the orange toner sheet.
  • Do not remove the toner cartridge unless troubleshooting requires it.

2. Verify paper loading

For the M232-M237 series:

  • Slide the paper guides out.
  • Load plain paper print-side up.
  • Slide the stack forward until it stops.
  • Adjust the paper guides so they rest against the paper.
  • Make sure the tray cover is installed properly if applicable.
  • Extend the output tray.

3. Check power connection

  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet.
  • Turn the printer on.
  • If the printer is unresponsive, unplug it, wait 60 seconds, reconnect, and turn it back on.

4. Do not connect USB too early

  • During first-time setup, HP says do not connect a USB cable at this time.
  • For HP+ printers, connect to the internet first; USB can be added later as a secondary connection.

5. Complete software setup

  • Install and open the HP app from 123.hp.com.
  • Add the printer and follow the on-screen steps.
  • On Windows 7/8, use HP Easy Start from 123.hp.com.

6. Put the printer in Wireless Setup Mode

If wireless setup did not complete:

  • Press and hold the Information button for 3 seconds, then release.
  • When all control panel buttons light up, press the Wi‑Fi and Cancel buttons at the same time.
  • The front light should turn purple and pulse.
  • Then reopen the HP app and retry setup.

7. Check the control panel for errors

If setup stops, look for any display code:

  • Er/01: Load paper or reload the stack.
  • Er/02: Close the cartridge access door fully.
  • Er/03: Remove and reload paper, then retry.
  • Er/04 / Er/05 / Er/06: Clear any paper jam and reset the printer if needed.
  • Er/07: Remove and reinstall the toner cartridge; replace if needed.
  • Er/08: Replace the toner cartridge, or change the “Very Low Setting” to Continue in printer settings.
  • Er/30: Make sure the protective sheet is removed from the scan glass, then restart the printer.
  • Er/79: Turn off the printer, remove the toner cartridge, wait 30 seconds, turn the printer on, reinsert the toner when Er/07 appears, then try again.

8. If there is a paper jam

Check these areas:

  • Input tray / printer base
  • Toner cartridge area
  • Output tray
  • Document feeder
  • Rear duplexer

After clearing paper:

  • Reinstall the toner cartridge if removed
  • Close all doors
  • Restart the printer

9. Reset the printer

If setup still does not finish:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back directly into a wall outlet.
  • Turn the printer on and retry setup.

10. Check toner and door status

  • Make sure the toner cartridge is installed correctly.
  • Make sure the cartridge access door is fully closed.

11. Retry setup
